A few thoughts on Shahrukh Jatoi #ShahrukhJatoi who murdered #ShahzedKhan in cold blood on a cool winter night in 2012 ...a thread
The Express Tribune's reporter Rabia Ali broke the story. The incident would have been relegated to a few paragraphs on the inside pages if it wasn't for editor Kamal Siddiqi who saw it's significance right at the start tribune.com.pk/story/485132/m…
People didn't know the whole details and the mention of 'feudal' in the headline obviously started an old ethnic debate. Shahruk is no feudal, instead his father Sikandar Jatoi made money as a construction contractor...
And he made A LOT of money. Just google the Sindh government websites for contracts or go through budget documents and you'd see how many roads etc his company has built over the years...
Right after Shahruk and his friends gunned down Shahzeb in December, 2012, Sikandar started using his wealth and connections to undermine the investigation...
Police officers involved in the case weren't too sure how far the case would go and had initially tried their best to give the culprits a free pass. He wasn't immediately arrested despite Shahzeb's family identifying who was the murderer...
Shahzeb Khanzada who was an anchor at The Express at the time immediately took up the story and it started to gain traction as people questioned how can a murder like this happened and culprits get away easily...
But even that wasn't enough to stop Sikandar Jatoi from using his influence in getting out the country. In the following weeks Shahruk, escorted by a PIA protocol officer, past the FIA officials, got on a plane and escaped...
A video of his calmly going through airport checks went viral back then...As the pressure mounted, Shahrukh eventually returned and was formally arrested. But that's when the real mockery of justice began...
I will never forget those few days of hearings at the court near the PIDC. There was no remorse, no shame, no guilt in the eyes of Shahruk and his friends. I remember seeing Shahzeb's father, DSP Aurengzeb, dressed in a neat police uniform - his weapon not on him - pacing and...
and saying 'I won't let this go'. Shahruk's whole family - cousins, uncles would be there at the court. Their gunmen in 4x4s not far off the court premises...
Shahrukh was apparently enrolled at an elite college in Lahore but his words to me were: "Hum ko english nahi aati, baad me batana kya likka tha" He was obviously having fun even during the trial...
Remember the 'White Toyota Rapist'? A white Toyota Corolla was parked in the premises. Shahrukh and the two main accused with him would gather near the terrace and discuss if that was really the car of that rapist...it was casual chitchat...no harm in that
Then came the KFC burgers, fries and cokes for the accused at the court premises. That was first glimpses of the privileges accorded to Shahrukh and his friends...
As the trial proceeded and Shahrukh was eventually convicted by an Anti Terrorism Court, his father mounted a counterattack. A TV channel he owned ran stories and advertisements, claiming how Shahrukh was being persecuted for being a Sindhi...
NO one really buy that argument. And public was overwhelmingly demanding that Shahruk pay for his crime. He was eventually jailed. I have heard tears replaced his victory signs he would flash to reporters as it became clear he's going in for life!...
It became one of the most high profile cases- thanks to Shazaib Khanzada and other journalists who stayed on it for so long. But that didn't mean that justice was delivered....
In jails Shahrukh was treated like a royalty - thanks to his father who would often pay for meals for hundreds of prisoners as an insurance for his son's protection and comfort. Shahrukh had his own TV, video games, servant and what not...
When Shahrukh finally had a meltdown staying within the jail walls - no luxury is enough for a prisoner - his father rented a whole hospital, faked his illness and got him transferred for a 'vacation'...
That he would one day walk free was inevitable. But let me tell you what happened to Shahzeb's father Aurengzaib. Contrary to what you have heard, he didn't walk away with tens of millions...
He died a broken man. He went mad in the end, wearing his sons tattered clothes and walking barefoot on the streets of Karachi - a city where justice would never prevail.
