If you're a reporter and you argue that the big election story is the price of gasoline and not the potential end to democracy, you're not doing your job. Here's why:
1.) You determine what the story is by covering it
2.) The end of democracy is profoundly more consequential
3.) The price of gasoline is not controlled by anyone in the US government (thank post COVID recovery, Putin, OPEC+ for the rise)
4.) The argument that this is or should be an election about price increases is a GOP talking point and deliberate distraction
5.) With "big lie" promoting candidates on the majority of ballots nationwide, the threat that this could be our last free and fair election is real
6.) The GOP has already said if they control House or Senate they will use their power to stop inquiries into coup, election fraud
7.) The GOP has regularly and nearly unanimously voted against every single proposed measure that could actually help with price pressures voters are feeling--which means they have not and will not and cannot do anything about these issues
8.) A GOP House &/or Senate will conduct sham impeachment investigations, block the progress of DoJ, & support efforts to undermine voting rights...and they will block Biden appointees to the court seeking to worsen judicial bias that is eliminating vital basic rights & freedoms
9.) GOP arguments that price increases have anything to do with Biden policies is not supported by economic analysis and is designed also to distract from the exceptionally good (historic) job creation and investment record of the Biden Admin
10.) The GOP econ track record is one of increasing deficits, creating economic crises, and aiding the rich at the expense of everyone else. (Do you think cutting social security and health benefits as they are proposing to do will help people deal w/economic pressure?)
The stakes are too high to fall for this GOP narrative. If you are a reporter and you do (or you are simply an individual using your social media platform to amplify these deceptions and distractions) you're not just getting it wrong.
If you miss the big story, the important story, the historically consequential story and allowing yourself to get lost in the MAGA smokescreen, you are making yourself an ally of the enemies of democracies, you are continuing the work of those who assaulted the Capitol on 1/6/21.
That's not an overstatement. That is the situation we face in the USA right now. History will look at the next three weeks as the moment we either lost the plot and in so doing undid the American experiment or whether saw the threat we face, framed it clearly & repelled it.

New GOP troll, bot & true believer nonsense is that democracy isn't at risk: even though they follow a coup plotter, are trying to elect 300 election deniers, are seeking to cut back voting rights even further, have 70+ percent of GOPers saying they'd vote for an election denier.
They say it is not at risk even though their leaders have openly said they want to put in place election officials who will ensure that elections go the way of the GOP. They say it is not at risk even as the extreme right majority on SCOTUS pares away fundamental freedoms.
They say it is not at risk even as they seek to strengthen the power of the minority over the majority. They say it is not at risk even as they promote policies that further empower and enrich the few who are most powerful at the expense of the many who they are disenfranchising.

Musk is dangerous. He has a very potent platform (even without owning Twitter) and is using it actively harm US & Western interests and support those of a brutal war criminal. Should he gain control of Twitter, the consequence for discourse/politics in the US will be v. damaging.
Consider that we are already at the point where Putin sympathizers lead one of our two political parties and have huge influence within one of our most significant media empires and they are on the verge of gaining another foothold.
Now view all that in the context of the fact that the Putin-sympathetic political party is poised to win back control of one or both houses of the U.S. Congress. And that it has growing influence within important European governments.

The GOP wants you to trade away your most fundamental rights--to vote, to free and fair elections, for a woman to control her body, to marry who you want, to protest price hikes not controlled by & barely influenced by those on the ballot. It is one of the great cons in history.
Think how pernicious it is. The GOP coddles the oil industry, voted to obstruct investments in green energy, knows price hikes are driven more by Putin & Saudis (who they support) by far than anyone in the US...and then wants you to vote against Dems in protest.
But it's all a distraction designed to divert attention away from the fact that a.) Dems were the only ones to do anything to help people in recent Econ crises, b.) GOP voted against that help, c.) GOP caused the crises like every recent economic crisis and...

A clear narrative of what actually happened on January 6, 2021 has emerged thanks to the great work of the House committee investigating the insurrection. Donald Trump led a multi-pronged attack on the government he had been elected to lead in an effort to steal an election.
That effort involved months of planning beginning before the election, a decision to declare victory regardless of the results, and efforts to place officials in sensitive government jobs who would support Trump's attempt to defraud the American people and pervert our democracy.
Trump & those enabling him actively worked to not just challenge election results on a state-by-state basis but to use lies & intimidation in their attempts to do so. They also perpetuated, with the assistance of right wing media & the vast majority of GOP leadership, a Big Lie.

This is just BS. It sidesteps the fact that OPEC+ could have delayed the decision, that they knew full well the implications for Biden/the US, that they knew the benefit being conferred on Russia, that there were reportedly discussions w/in OPEC+ supporting a different approach.
It ignores that the U.S. had pressed to reduce gas prices during the July visit and had made it clear that was an important issue for the U.S. It ignores that raising prices could accelerate recession which could dampen demand & undermine their articulated goal of raising prices.
The idea that their vote in the UN cancels this out or shows balance is absurd since the vote was largely symbolic, the OPEC+ decision provides Russia what it most critically needs and that voting against Russia was unquestionably the right/moral thing to do anyway.

You hear a lot of talk about great powers, but really, what's so great about any of them? Yes, they all have the power to destroy the world but describing that as a "power" is perverse considering what you are left with afterwards.
Russia, is not a declining power, it is a former power that has hurled itself off a cliff & is plummeting toward irrelevance. China is thought of as a rising power but it can not afford to let its attentions drift too far from addressing the internal disorders that could undo it.
India, still lightyears away from tapping its potential, is frittering away its promise due to bad leadership that is offering the swan song of hate-fueled, anti-democratic demagoguery. Brazil, aspirations aside, remains, per the joke, doomed to always be the country of tomorrow.
