It starts with the single-worst MSBY New Year’s party ever.

Well, okay, it actually starts with high school nationals, and the first boy who’s caught his eye since Wakatoshi-kun.
Miya Atsumu is a decent setter at 16 and only improves as time goes on. He’s the reason Kiyoomi was torn between the Adlers and MSBY in the first place.

And maybe Kiyoomi sticks to his story about coin tosses, but he does think the universe works in mysterious ways.
Which brings us to this party, in which every single member of the Black Jackals has brought a plus one. Except Kiyoomi that is. And Atsumu, he supposes, who arrived 15 minutes ago, alone, and immediately pulled Shoyo to the bar for shots.
Atsumu is tossing back tequila like it’s water — one, two, three, four — and chases it back with orange juice. It’s a choice that has Kiyoomi’s eyebrows raised to hairline and poor Hinata looking on in awe.

Hinata must feel Kiyoomi’s presence through
the sheer force of universal ether because he’s coming this way, eyes wide like he’s on the court waiting for the ball, and dragging Atsumu behind him.

“Omi-san! Atsumu-san is here! Isn’t that nice?” Shoyo says all the while shoving Atsumu into the chair across from him.
“Thanks Omi-san!” Shoyo says, his ask implied and understood, much to Kiyoomi’s dismay. He beelines it back to his date and doesn’t look back.

Kiyoomi is dreading everything, spiraling into “how did I manage to be the designated babysitter” when —

“Omi.”
Followed by a thunk of a forehead falling into the table.

“Miya,” he says, because it’s all he can do.

“He dumped me.”

“Oh,” Kiyoomi says smartly.

“Was gonna propose.”

“I’m sorry.”

“Don’ be. ‘S his loss, yeah?” Atsumu lifts his head, small smile accompanied by sad eyes.
Kiyoomi knows he should say something comforting but his mouth is moving faster than his brain.

“Dating is stupid,” he blurts, and because he can’t stop himself, “Meeting someone, opening up to them, changing your life for them and they just leave. And then you have to do it
all over again. It’s dumb.”

Silence. Well, except for the mass of voices vibrating off the bar walls.

Atsumu laughs, suddenly. “Yer right, Omi-kun. It is stupid.” He’s smiling amusedly. “Maybe I should jus’ date someone I know. Who knows me.”
“It’s easier,” Kiyoomi says. “When you already feel comfortable together.”

And maybe Kiyoomi’s tipsier than he thought given how loose his lips are right now.

“Hey Omi-kun? Le’s make a deal right now,” Atsumu’s says. “In four years, when we’re 30, if we’re still single
then let’s just get married.”

“You wanna marry me?” Kiyoomi says a little too loudly.”

Atsumu laughs again. “Yeah, Omi. Yer my favorite. Jus’ don’t tell Bokkun.”

“Okay.” And Kiyoomi thinks his own voice sounds too earnest. Since when did he want to marry ANYONE,
let alone Miya Atsumu?

“Hell yeah,” Atsumu says and visibly melts into his chair. “Le’s seal it with a kiss. At midnight. New Year’s promise.”

And when the countdown starts, Atsumu’s scoots closer. His hand cups Kiyoomi’s jaw — four, three, two, one.
They’re still kissing even as cheers erupt and die down. Atsumu nuzzles his nose against Kiyoomi’s and kisses him once more before pulling back, a dopey smile adorning his flushed face.

Kiyoomi swoons.

They all leave to go home and celebrate with their families. Kiyoomi
visits the shrine with his family, and if his wish has something to do with a certain blond setter, that’s his business.

When Kiyoomi returns to Osaka just 2 weeks later with plans to ask Atsumu on a proper date, he’s too late. Atsumu has a new girlfriend, a girl he
knew back in high school. He’d always thought she was cute, he says. She always thought he was softer than he let on.

It’s a long-term relationship.

Kiyoomi shatters and then picks up the pieces before anyone can step on them.

He schools his face and pretends
he doesn’t feel anything at all. Like he hasn’t thought of nothing but Atsumu for the last two weeks. For the last 10 years.
Kiyoomi dates on and off, but nothing really sticks. Nothing makes him feel quite as exhilarated as chasing a volleyball or a memory of New Year’s kiss.

Atsumu buys an engagement ring just after his 29th birthday, with plans to propose over the holidays.
Kiyoomi skips the annual New Year’s party. He doesn’t go on social media. He doesn’t think of Atsumu.

He goes home early instead. Visits the shrine and wishes for a new beginning.
When Kiyoomi returns to Osaka two weeks into January, he’s met with Bokuto’s laughter and a small, sad smile on Atsumu’s face. His usual light is just a tad dimmer, his sets are just slightly off.

Kiyoomi inhales, ready to call out their setter when Bokuto claps a hand
on his shoulder.

“Omi-omi. Let it go, today, okay? Tsum-tsum is still hurting.”

“Hurting? Does he need to see the medic?”

“Ah, no. Did you not hear? He proposed, and she said no.”

“Oh.”

And Kiyoomi thinks this is a little too reminiscent.

He lets it go.
Months pass, things get easier. Kiyoomi asks Atsumu to dinner after practice and they chat about what happened. One dinner turns into dinner every week, turns into cooking dinner for two a couple times a week.

Atsumu’s 30th birthday comes and goes. He doesn’t date.
The year passes. Kiyoomi and Atsumu go to the annual New Year’s party. They stick together. The countdown starts, and Atsumu scoots closer, his shoulder bumping Kiyoomi’s. Four, three, two, one. They don’t kiss.
Kiyoomi goes home and visits the shrine. He wishes for happy endings.

When he returns to Osaka this time, it’s to Atsumu greeting him with a smile.

When Kiyoomi turns 30, it’s Atsumu who takes him to dinner and walks him home.

It’s Atsumu who confesses.
Atsumu, who kisses him when they’re cooking dinner, who connects the dots on Kiyoomi’s skin and says that this year, he wished for constellations.

It’s Kiyoomi who proposes 2 years later, surrounded by all their favorite people.

And to his greatest joy, Miya Atsumu says yes.
/fin/

It’s sappier than I intended hahaha.
