If this had happened in any other country, @TheEconomist would have long think pieces about how fascinatingly exotic it is that this little island nation that calls itself a democracy has had 5 prime ministers in 6 years from THE SAME PARTY 😂😂😂

Lessons India can learn from America, or specifically, the civil rights movement. Decades of asking these questions and having public protests and debates and pressuring politicians until Title VIII of civil rights act 1968 that put the onus of NOT discriminating on the owner.
Every time I read about institutionalized discrimination in India these days, something that's growing not reducing, I'm reminded of the writings and speeches of activists from the civil rights movement. Whose basic point was you can't leave equality to "the market".
1865 is when America abolished slavery. All black folks and their children forever were made citizens. And the idealized thinking then was, okay, now everyone is equal in the eyes of the law. Racism will go away in a generation or two without official state sanction.

This. I love the Expressway but if you're old enough, you know what it did was make an ideally-4-hour journey reliably and mostly 4 hours. The old highway got you from Bombay to Pune in about the same time for decades, until traffic congestion & accidents made it unreliable.
The whole "I get from Pune to Bombay in just 2 hours" is true if you, like me, have a home in Chandni Chowk and family in Chembur. Then yeah, on most days, it'll be 2 hours.

But who is going in 2 hrs from Pune proper to Bombay proper? Give them a physics Nobel.
Pre-expressway, the old Bombay Pune highway (which, fun fact, is a nice breezy drive nowadays on many days, sometimes even faster than Expressway) was getting you between the 2 cities in 4 hours on most days.

But if things went wrong, it could be 8 hrs, 12 hrs, 24 hrs!

This is why middle aged New Yorkers go to bars only on weeknights lol. This is our neighborhood regular bar. Ideal on Tuesday and Wednesday nights.
I used to find it weird how very different the bars and the general night scene are in East Village vs West Village, though they are just two halves of the same neighborhood.

Then I read that they are not at all two halves of the same neighborhood! "East Village" is made up.
The original village is Greenwich Village, now also called West Village. But until the 60s or so, it was just the village.

East of it were many tenements, rundown buildings & general areas of Cooper Square, St Marks, Alphabet City etc. Very unfashionable for decades.

A full decade into Modi's CMship, Gujarat had objectively fallen behind on many indices.

After 2014, of course, they make their own indices. They can claim Gujarati students test higher than Singapore and lemmings will nod along cos "Gujarat Model"
In my childhood, there was a different phrase for the Gujarat Model. It was Kulhadi ki Kheer.

Tharoor is the Indian Tulsi Gabbard so expect him also to leave the party in a huff and start cosying up to the sangh even more.
Tharoor has a lifelong pattern of ambitions disproportionate to the amount of work he's willing to put into chasing them. His quixotic UNSG bid the randomly put India on the spot. And now this very theatrical US primary style faux challenge. Always parachuting in.
Dude has been with the party for over a decade. If he really wanted to lead the party, that was plenty of time for him to lay the groundwork. Build regional alliances. That's how Indian politics works.

But he's most comfortable with camera politics. Esp NDTV flavored.
