NEWS: The FBI has arrested New York lawyer John O'Kelly in connection with the Jan. 6 attack. Law enforcement says he was no. 294 on the FBI's Capitol Violence site.
Happening now: Mark Mazza tells Judge James E. Boasberg he got "caught up in a mob mentality that I never anticipated" and he's "not quite the monster that the prosecution has described me as."
He brought two loaded weapons to the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6.
“All I hear about in D.C. from Indiana is that it’s the murder capital of the United States,” Mazza says, claiming he only intended to use the guns for self-protection.
“I’m treating this kind of like another military step, like it’s something I’ve got to do," Mazza says of his incarceration time.
“I wish I could erase it. I wish I could go back and take that hour back." Maybe go to a museum and grab some dinner, he says.
New: Federal prosecutor tells Chief Judge Beryl Howell that DOJ is still “very early on” in the Jan. 6 probe and that it’s “not an unreasonable expectation” that they’ll clear 2,000 cases. That number is “well within reason” if they “get bodies” to bring cases through recruiting.
The total universe of potential defendants is around 3,000. The FBI already has the names of hundreds of additional rioters who have not yet been arrested.
- Steve Bannon sentencing
- Jan. 6 rioter sentencing
- Oath Keepers trial
- Trial of Capitol Police officer who told Jan. 6 rioter to remove Facebook content about storming Capitol
Probably some grand jury stuff too, who knows.
The latest:
- Guy who brought two loaded guns to the Capitol gets five years in federal prison.
- "Loudmouth" rioter who lied to a jury gets four years in federal prison.
- Steve Bannon gets four months in federal prison, pending appeal.
Chance Upmore, the first Capitol rioter whose incriminating photo made use of portrait mode, also snapped a shot of another rioter trying to steal a painting from the Capitol, per court filing.
"After they left the Capitol, Chance Uptmore and his father went to Virginia to get a lobster roll."
