A new #TheOwlHouse article reveals some interesting things about the show. We’ll summarize it in this thread. Please give the full article a read, it’s very interesting and this thread is just giving off some key parts of it.
1. Luz, the first bisexual main lead in a Disney Channel show, was made that way because series creator Dana Terrace came out as bi before the pitch was made.
Dana states: It felt very natural to want the main character of my first show to also be bi. There was not much more thought put into it than that. I [knew] it would be important for people to see on a Disney channel show but I didn't even know if it would get picked up by Disney
2. The name Luz is a homage to Terrace’s best friend and writer on the show, Luz Batista.
3. The creation of #TheOwlHouse came from a place of “spite”. A writing partner of Terrace called the initial story idea “boring”.
The pitch bible, which was 15 pages, took 2 months to develop.
She pitched the idea to Cartoon Network & Nick but they ultimately passed on it—
Leaving Disney Channel who obviously picked up the project.
4. The queer representation that she put in the show was not met with much adversity at first. Now promoting season 3, Terrace said the response to the show's premiere was "next level”.
The show was the #2 broadcast on Disney Channel that day and trended on YouTube with over—
1.9 million viewers. Dana also stated that this was the first time the television executives made the connection between online support and actual people watching the show live.
"At first, [the executives] would see the show trending every other day on Twitter and be like, 'Oh, anyone can trend on Twitter, that doesn't actually mean anything,' but seeing the views on YouTube and seeing the people who came to New York Comic Con…”
“…gave them a much better idea that, 'Oh no,' the show is actually successful,'" “For the crew, it's extremely validating because we work our asses off."
5. In the third season, the show will explore themes of neurodivergence and will also continue to explore the theme of grief.
6. The decision to the show’s cancellation was actually made by former Disney Branded Television president Gary Marsh. It was announced during a meeting that it was cancelled.
“The meeting was extremely frustrating because we were doing well, we were getting decent numbers, it didn't make sense. We were being acknowledged by the studio. Especially during a time when the studio should have been supporting crews and artists and their production staff…”
“…and we were getting none of that on top of [the show being canceled], it was just so much. It took a while to recover from that creatively.” Dana Stated.
7. Because of the cancellation, the show has been able to do concepts that the crew were initially unsure of putting in. Like the collector.
8. Terrace states that "The first special [of season 3] would literally not exist in the way it does...without that cancellation and I am very proud of that episode. A lot of the crew is very proud of that episode. People seem to love it, so that's our silver lining.”
Finally, Dana hopes to continue #TheOwlHouse at some point, through a comic spin-off if possible.
“After Amy and Hartley decide to use a villain song in a Battle of the Bands, Eva forbids them. When a delivery person drops off Celia’s new recliners, Vic gives them an upgrade.
11/11 - Bad Energy
“When Vic says he needs Flashform’s helmet, Amy and Colby must scramble to get it back from Milo. When the lair causes a big electric bill, the family must cover to Celia.”
11/18 - No Escape (ONE HOUR SPECIAL EVENT)
“It’s Declan and Hartley’s anniversary. To surprise Hartley, Declan arranges an escape room event, but when the family arrives, they begin to worry things aren’t what they seem.” (PT 1)
