Job Interview and Lying
Interviewer (I): I see you have recent experience. Could you tell me why you left you last job?
Applicant (A): Well over 60 of my staff resigned and said they were no longer prepared to work with me .... ImageImage
I: Why was that?
A: They were upset about someone I appointed to be in charge of staff welfare. It turned out he had a little bit of a habit of sexually assaulting people.
I: Well, we can all make mistakes. I mean you weren’t to know.
A: Absolutely. That is what I told them.
A: And I told some of them to tell everyone else that I didn’t know.
I: And did they not accept that?
A: No. Because a highly respected man who used to work for the organisation, told everyone that I did know as he had told me. They said it was a safeguarding issue or something.
A: I mean, they made me out to be some sort of liar.
I: Well, was that because you did lie?
A: Erm, well, yes. But to be fair, I had sacked him and I suspended his club membership.
I: You sacked him when you knew that the man in charge of staff welfare had a history of abuse?
A: No, I appointed him when I knew that. I sacked him when everyone found out that I knew and had lied about it.
I: I can see why they would be upset. But I am surprised that they resigned because of that.
A: I know. I mean they refused to work for me.
A: And nobody else in the organisation wanted to work for me. And this wasn’t long after they all backed me
I: What? The whole organisation supported you?
A: Well most of them did. There was a vote to see who had confidence in me and over 200 people said that they backed me.
I: Over 200. That is impressive.
A: Yes - but 100 of those were my team. They had to back me or lose their jobs.
I: How many didn’t have confidence in you?
A: Err, well some did but they were people who just had it in for me.
I: So how many?
A: Well, err, um, you know about 148.
I: 148!!! That was before they found out that you knew about the abusive man?
A: Yes. They were upset about a few other things too.
I: What other things?
A: They were upset about some meetings that were held in my office and said they shouldn’t have happened.
I: Well surely it is normal to have meetings in an office?
A: That is what I said. Perfectly normal. Nothing untoward. Nothing to see here. Just a normal meeting with some cheese and wine.
I: Cheese and wine?!
A: Yes, perfectly normal to have cheese and wine at a meeting.
A meeting not a party. Cheese, Wine, and some music. Normal meeting.
I: Music at a meeting?
A: Only karaoke. Oh and some dancing.
I: Well that sounds like a party. Why didn’t you just say so?
A: Because it was illegal to have a party. So I told this big meeting that it was just a meeting and all of the rules were followed. But they got upset because apparently it is very serious to not tell the truth to this big meeting. And now they are investigating me?
I: So you are in trouble with the big meeting for having a party?
A: No. I am in trouble with them for lying about it. I was in trouble with the Police for having the parties.
I: Parties – more than one? And the Police?!
A: O yes. That is why my colleagues were all cross with me
A. And some of them got fined by the Police too
I: Fined?
A: Yes. That’s what happens when you get convicted of breaking the law.
I: Convicted?!
A: I know. And I the people investigating me can ban me from coming to work. So I may need to take a few days off when they suspend me.
I: You seem to have upset people quite a lot. Anything else?
A: Well they did get upset when I tried to change the office rules.
I: Why?
A: Well I was changing the rules, so that my friend who broke the rules, wouldn’t have broken the rules because I had just changed the rules.
I: I see. So would you say that you lost your job because you are a serial compulsive liar?
A: Sorry, which job are you talking about now?
I: What! You have lost other jobs for lying?
A: Erm, well, yes, some.
I: So apart from knowingly employing a pervert, lying, getting caught lying, lying about lying, being in trouble with the police and having most of your staff resign, are there any other reasons you left you last job?..... ImageImage
