This Saturday I was assaulted by a man named John Fournace in University Park Texas, while I was reporting on a "Protect Texas Kids" protest. I've since learned Fournace has a criminal history of assault with a weapon, vandalism, and disrupting a school board meeting.
1/
Prior to being assaulted, I was singled out by the organizer of the protest, Kelly Neidert, along with her antisemitic supporter, Ali Jamal, who called me an antisemitic slur. Shortly after, I was attacked by Fournace, who has attended several of Neidert's protests.
2/
Fournace has previously threatened me threatened me, as well as someone he mistook for me, with violence.
Fournace's wife, Lizeth Pineda, also has attended a number of Protect Texas Kids protests. She followed me at the park I was at until her husband assaulted me. Right before it happened, she looked at me and then nodded at him.
4/
After the assault, I wanted to file a complaint. The first cop I spoke with downplayed my concerns, claimed what happened wasn't assault, and suggested I may have instigated it. They didn't take any info from Fournace while he was there. I had to follow up with a supervisor.
5/
While I walked away without being seriously harmed, I'm deeply disappointed that a man like Fournace is being allowed to threaten and assault people across the Dallas area with little to no accountability. Here's a photo of him from Roanoke, Texas.
6/
Unfortunately, police haven't taken serious steps to stop or follow up on violence by people like Fournace or Proud Boys at multiple Protect Texas Kids events. No citations, no arrests and no consequences, so now they are emboldened enough to attack journalists like me.
7/
Not doing my job is an option I refuse to consider. Practicing self defense in the face of an assault like this would have likely resulted in me getting arrested, not the aggressor. Private security is expensive. So what are journalists to do? @RethinkIntel

In order to be safe while reporting going forward I need to buy a few new things — including a body camera so I can keep my hands free while still recording.

With your help, I can stay safe at events while doing my job. But unfortunately, as I mentioned above, Fournace has also threatened and harassed a man who he thought was me. He's a danger to the community until the authorities hold him accountable.
NOW: I've just been assaulted at a Coffee Park in Dallas, Texas, by a man who has previously threatened me at a protest. He came up to me without provocation, pushed me twice, and was escorted away by the police who were less than 10 yards away. I'm safe and unharmed.
The protest I came here to report on was organized by Kelly Neidert with Protect Texas Kids. The man who assaulted me has been at several of her protests in the past. The police have asked me to not get closer to the protest The police are now by protest and man who assaulted me.
Here's a video of the time just a few weeks ago that the same man threatened me with violence in front of a police officer.
NEW: I recently learned Dallas is home to one of the most prolific Holocaust deniers. His name is John Wear, author of a revisionist history of Nazi Germany and the editor of a Holocaust denial website. He claims the Holocaust was "invented" and the Jewish genocide "alleged." 1/
Mr. Wear, who worked most of his life as a CPA, has been writing in the Holocaust denial space for years. He's currently listed as the Editor of Inconvenient Truth. Wear's book was published by American Free Press. The @splcenter has described both as Holocaust denial groups.
2/
Mr. Wear's book, "Germany's War," argues Nazi Germany was not the aggressor in WWII and describes Adolf Hitler as the "savior" of Europe on the. back cover. One reviewer on Amazon praised the book. "NO communist or Zionist lies. JUST THE TRUTH!"
A story no major outlet has picked up on: a right wing newspaper in Dallas that sued me for calling it propaganda and lost continues to quote/report on a hoax BLM group that was linked to a Republican PR firm, for stories that denigrate public schools and Democratic politicians.
Despite extensive coverage about Dallas Justice Now's link to a Republican PR firm and its dubious roots in Dallas, a right wing propaganda paper called the Dallas Express has quoted Dallas Justice Now on a number of topics.
Recently, Dallas Justice Now has been promoting school choice and vouchers. That happens to be a political issue the publisher of the Dallas Express, Monty Bennett, has been a major donor.
TODAY: an anti-LGBTQ protest outside a family Pride event held at a church in Frisco, Texas. The protest organizer, Kelly Neidert of Protect Texas Kids, claims there is "no such thing as a family friendly Pride event." Proud Boys in Buc-ees maska are once again in attendance.
Nearly every anti-LGBTQ protest organized by Neidert and Protect Texas Kids has featured multiple Proud Boys. Neidert claims she doesn't coordinate with them or know them, but she has been seen standing and chatting with them at multiple protests.
Ali Jamal, a member of the fascistic Groyper movement, is also in Frisco today supporting Neidert's protest. He recently made antisemitic comments at a True Texas Project event where Neidert and the publisher of Texas Scorecard spoke.
Proud Boy and religious extremists heeded the call from anti-LGBTQ groups and right wing media who want to shut down a "drag bingo" event in Katy, Texas. They've been met with resistance from community activists and antifascist groups.
The same live streamer who said that the anti-LGBTQ group Protect Texas Kids doesn't have "Jew money" is in Katy, Texas. Proud Boys and other masked men are clearly visible in the stream.
NEW: Mayor Derek France of Flower Mound, Texas wants to pass an ordinance banning face masks while possessing a firearm, and says it's because of the presence of "ANTIFA" at events in nearby towns. Notably, Mayor France did not mention Proud Boys or militia in the post.
Given that Texas is now a "Constitutional Carry" state, I'm not sure of the legitimacy of an ordinance that makes it illegal to carry a gun while wearing a facemask.
Proud Boys and militia have routinely attended anti-drag protests in north Texas that have been organized by a self-described "Christian Fascist." Some have been violent. But apparently they aren't the problem for Mayor France. It's only these folks that get called out.
