Can't sleep so here is a 🧵on the UCP and covid. It is clear over the last three weeks that the UCP has become the party explicitly opposed to covid restrictions. That was the thrust of Smith's winning campaign.
The architects of the covid restrictions are gone or on their way out. Kenney is out, Hinshaw is being replaced, Smith has promised to replace the AHS Board and fire many senior managers. How many more people at Alberta Health including CMOH staff will be removed?
At the AGM, Smith publicly apologized for covid restrictions and has pledged to try and provide amnesty for those who deliberately violated public health measures. She has also pledged to make covid vaccine status a protected class under Alberta Human Rights Act.
Take Back Alberta, formed in large measure to opposition to covid restrictions, elected a slate on UCP Board. So, combined with Smith, anti-covid restrictions activists now control over 1/2 of the UCP Board.
These are people who believe that individual freedom trumps public health measures during a global pandemic. That going to movies, hockey games, restaurants, church services, in-person classes, not requiring masks is MORE important than saving thousands of lives.
That we should have ignored the advice of 99% of health experts in favour of contrary advice from rogue doctors. That hydroxychloroquine and ivermectin were better covid treatments than vaccines.
Some cabinet ministers have either repudiated their past statements (such as Madu who as Justice Minister was in charge of enforcing restrictions) or said that they privately pushed back against restrictions (Toews). Most have gone silent.
Copping was Health Minister starting in Sept 21. A period that saw covid restrictions maintained, and sometimes increased, until they started to fall in Feb 22. Did he see the value to protecting human life and the health care system in covid restrictions?
To Copping's credit, he has said that restrictions could come back if covid comes back in force. But he was contradicted by Smith who has promised no more lockdowns (or course we were never locked down).
And what does Tyler Shandro think? He was Health Minister during the worst of covid. He brought in most of the covid restrictions. He is still in cabinet. How, unlike Kenney, Hinshaw, Yiu, and others, has he survived?
Does Shandro still believe that covid restrictions were justified? Does he believe that he should also publicly apologize for his actions during the pandemic?
As Justice Minister, what legal advice will he provide Smith about issuing pardons and amnesty to those fined/jailed for violating covid restrictions?
If the UCP wants to relitigate covid, then lets do it. Smith has apologized for covid restrictions and vaccine mandates. She has claimed that the unvaccinated were highly discriminated against. That is where her sympathies lie.
But, where is the sympathy for the almost 5, 000 Albertans who have died of covid? Each of them had friends and family who still mourn them. Where is the sympathy of those who had surgeries and other medical procedures delayed?
What is the impact of long covid? What is the impact of the psychological strain on frontline doctors, nurses, and EMS personnel?
This is not UCP vs NDP. This is not conservative vs progressive. This is not right vs left.
This is those that believe covid restrictions and vaccines were necessary in combating a pandemic vs those that believe individual rights matter more than public health, covid was a hoax, vaccines are deadly. What side are you on?

If the UCP was hoping for displays of unity at their AGM, they couldn't have asked more than having Toews/Jean introduce Smith. There is no way that Jean would have introduced Kenney after 2017 leadership race. unitedconservative.ca/livestream/
Smith begins her speech with details about the strength of her caucus and the work that they did at their retreat.
Smith promises that every UCP MLA (whether in cabinet or not) will be heavily involved in policy development. Note: this would be a big contrast with what went on under Kenney.

I, and others, have been quite critical of Smith's comment that the unvaccinated were “the most discriminated against group that I’ve ever witnessed in my lifetime.” Comments that Smith has tried to clarify, but not apologize for. 1/2
Based on the vicious emails, voice mails, and tweets I have subsequently received, there are lots of people that agreed with Smith's original comments. Yes they are a small minority of Albertans/Canadians, but they are angry. Very angry.
Those that are vaccine-hesitant or anti-vax, those that either didn't get vaccinated or felt coerced in doing so are not going away. They support Smith and want to re-litigate covid restrictions. They want payback and not just Kenney, Hinshaw, and other AHS officials.

Please make yourself comfortable for a short by-election story. In 2007, John Tory was leader of the Ontario PC party and lost the election and his riding in Toronto. So in 2009 he convinced the local MPP in Haliburton—Kawartha Lakes—Brock to step down...
In what was a safe PC riding, Tory lost the by-election to the Liberal candidate. Tory resigned as PC leader the next day...
Tory then became a talk radio host. Before making a political comeback and becoming Toronto's mayor in 2014....

Danielle Smith will be sworn in Tuesday as Premier of Alberta. There are two unusual aspects with this ceremony. First, while she will be sworn in on Oct 11, the rest of cabinet will be on Oct 21. Typically the Premier and Cabinet are sworn in at the same time.
In addition, this will likely be a larger cabinet shuffle than when you have a new Premier from the same party, ie., Prentice, Hancock, Redford, or Stelmach. Expect some backbench promotions, some leadership rivals not returning to cabinet, and Cabinet veterans not re-appointed.
Second, how rapidly Smith is being sworn in as Premier. She won UCP leadership and was sworn in as Premier 5 days later and this included a long weekend. Very quick when compared to other AB Premiers:
Kenney 14
Notley 19
Prentice 9
Hancock 3**
Redford 6
Stelmach 11

Ok its time. I need to go public. Especially now that Craig Chandler has posted the suit on facebook and been fired by the Smith campaign. Personal and public 🧵coming
On a late August Sunday night, @ThisIsMeCassie received a series of phone calls allegedly from the Smith campaign. At the time, they sounded legit to me. Next morning Smith campaign denied involvement claiming that it might have been a prank.
I gave a series of interviews on the topic on Monday August 22. Here is what I told CTV. You can see that no definitive statement was made, just some possibilities. This is fair comment.

A brief 🧵on Shandro's press conference on not enforcing federal gun legislation.
1) Shandro claims that this opposition has nothing to do with wanting an Alberta Police Force. This is disingenuous. One of the key motivations for an Alberta Police Force is about the enforcement, or lack thereof, of federal legislation. Especially firearms.
2) Why did Shandro not direct CPS and EPS to not enforce federal legislation? Why just the RCMP? See #1.
