What makes a good #ENS name (for investing purposes).
A thread 🧵
There are an infinite amount of ENS names that can be created.
Some are amazing and will sell for millions in the future.
Some are pretty good and will sell for a good profit.
Most are awful and will never sell.
The key to a good name is that it is instantly recognizable.
When someone sees the name, they should not have to do any mental process to figure it out its meaning.
Their brain should be able to process the name instantly.
Here are some concepts to think about to see if a name does this or not.
*This is clearly just my opinion, we can't know exactly what hundreds of millions of people will want in the future. You're welcome to disagree, always appreciate constructive feedback*
1. Length
Shorter names are almost always better than longer names.
3-6 character names with meaning will also stand out a ton in the future where hundreds of millions of names have been minted, and most end up quite long.
Just like in web2 domains.
2. Clean
Traditional keyboard letters and numbers only.
This one is subjective, but probably worth following if you want to increase your chances over the long term.
Accent marks, symbols, emojis etc.
They are not commonly used in web2 domains and I don't see that changing.
3. Meaning
For an end user to spend significant money on a domain, it needs to truly mean something to them. Some form of connection. Things like:
• First/last names
• nicknames
• famous characters
If it doesn't connect with them, they'll just buy a basic $5 domain.
4. Brandable
Whether for a personal brand or a company brand, is it a name they would want to represent them?
This is where dictionary words are great, as well as two word phrases.
Anything that people or companies use in daily life or to represent themselves in media.
5. Daily Usage
Dictionary words, terms or slang that are commonly used will likely be great ENS names.
Things that people are used to reading or saying frequently are great.
Slang can be great for minting because new slang terms come up constantly, so you may be able to mint them in the future if you're fast.
Two word phrases that mean one thing are the best bet for still being able to mint good ones.
waitroom.eth or houseparty.eth for example.
Would love to hear what you think makes a great ENS name.
Let me know and I'll give you my take.
