Slow clap for this stunning example of a passive construction /1
Person who literally writes media headlines, at acknowledged pinnacle of determining what constitutes "news" that's "fit to print" presents headlines as self scribed. /2
"Voters don't care about X" (wherein X is basically the total seizure of our most fundamental freedoms - take your pick which) is a failure of media to inform voters about X. /3
And, campaigns, instead of viewing "voters don't care about X" as proof that SHIT we must be way more forceful in bringing X to the fore because - hi - when we did we were wooing voters - decide, let's just not talk about X. /4
You win by SETTING THE TERMS OF DEBATE. If you want to be a leader, you need to, go first. /5
Unengaged people are now finally tuning into election and contemplating what they'll do. When we were forcefully arguing that Dems will #ProtectOurFreedoms and Trumpists will take away everything you hold dear, we were ascending. Need to repeat this for newly engaged to hear. /6
It is not the job of one team to ensure all players abide by the rules of the game. This is why there are rules and referees in the first place. It cannot and must not fall to Democrats only to protect, defend and ensure democracy. /7
Yet media report "democracy is eroding" when folks in media are actively digging away the dirt that sustains it. Informing the electorate about what is happening AND who is behind it forms the roots that anchor any semblance of democracy.

The thing about talking about the existential threats that Trump Republicans pose AND getting to the heart of what's top of mind for voters - making ends meet - is that these are ONE IN THE SAME. /1
You can - and should - talk about "democracy issues" but there's no reason to do so using that phrase. There are simple ways to link the total assaults on all of freedoms - bodily and budgetary. /2
The "Great Again" to which the Trumpists seek to return us isn't merely the 1950s, it's the 1920s. An era where white men didn't merely suppress all others but a tiny sliver among this cohort ruled over the rest. /3

If you want people to vote for progressives you can't get them to do that by repeating right wing ideas. You have to get the people who already support you to repeat why progressive things are good for all of us & the alternative is to cede our freedoms, families and futures.
When you tell people - the way you ought to make your election decision is who loves police more - you give ground to the opposition. What people actually want is SAFETY. And so you call out how Trump Republicans threaten our lives, our livelihoods, our families and our freedoms.
Trump Republicans are incredibly vulnerable on the question of how we keep ourselves and our families safe. They block every popular commonsense gun measure out there. And they cheerlead a criminal conspiracy to overthrow our elections.

It's "Roevember" with Dems realizing talking about protecting abortion access and women's rights is a GOOD THING. And, yes Dobbs brought to fore. But what would have been possible had we done this before - rather than shrink from, triangulate on this all along? /1
In 2020, Dems barely made any ads mentioning abortion even as TWENTY FIVE states had passed abortion bans in 2019. Cause they'd been told - it's too divisive. /2
In 2018, the "healthcare election" tons of money spent on ads by Dems, barely anything about a key healthcare issue: abortion. And women's rights? Pundits and operatives hand wringing that demonstrations ag. Kavanaugh were "too aggressive" and would cost us.

We win by defining the terms of the debate: "Two-thirds of voters feel their rights and freedoms are very much at stake in this election"
cbsnews.com/news/house-rep…
We lose when we respond to their terms of debate. That's why disavowing claims they've made about us is a losing strategy.
Republicans are predictably reviving their only storyline: race baiting, fear mongering, scapegoating and deliberately dividing – to hide from view the fact that they’re actually the ones endangering us all.
Our campaign narrative IS working - and they're scared.

Americans attachment to system justification may just undo us.
When Trump was first elected, my Honduran husband very calmly decided we should hide cash in different spots in our house, saying "when there's a coup the first thing that happens is a run on banks."
He took this possibility as a realistic given, since coups are things that happen in places with people. And this is, after all, a place with people.

We should not force people to perform their pain for us as a condition of accepting their humanity.
Yet much of Democratic and broader center-left messaging does precisely this because we get baited into opposition's frame. The frame that says humans are fundamentally unworthy and must be punished till they prove - through their wealth and their whiteness - their merit.
This is what the rush to tell horrifying stories of pregnancy, in order to justify abortion, does. It says - if you have been made to suffer horrifically you shall get this one pass, we shall deem you a person.
