Hey #therapisttwitter: Are you troubled by the new EPPP-2 licensing exam? If so, here’s a 🧵 on what you can do. If not, here’s a thread on why you definitely should be: (1/10)
/ASPPB is attempting to force states to adopt a 2nd multiple choice exam for licensure, at high costs to applicants, and despite evidence that it will disproportionately impact psychology candidates of color. This is the wrong move for our field and the people we serve. Why?
/ EPPP-2 will create new barriers to practice amidst a national mental health crisis. Escalating rates of mental health concerns nationwide have intensified pre-existing provider shortages. EPPP-2 will slow progress toward licensure when more psychologists are urgently needed.
/ EPPP-2 will further restrict diversity in the field. Research on the EPPP finds that Black and Latinx candidates fail at rates 2 to 4x higher than white candidates, constricting the pipeline for psychologists of color...
/ We should be trying to make licensure a more just and equitable process, not amplifying existing problems. This test would add to the structural racism in our field.
/ EPPP-2 will not enhance protection of the public. There is no evidence that another multiple choice exam is an improvement over, or even as good as, existing evaluation methods, including supervisory ratings. EPPP-2 scores will be more strongly related to test-taking ability.
/EPPP-2 won’t add anything beyond the existing exam. The predicted 95% pass rate for candidates who have passed EPPP-1 suggests that the exams are highly redundant and lack incremental validity.
/EPPP-2 creates new financial burdens for trainees. It will nearly double the cost for licensure testing to around $1200, plus the cost of test prep materials, study time, and lost productivity and income potential. This will be a massive burden, particularly to FG/LI candidates
/Attempts to address these concerns with ASPPB have not yielded substantive change despite being raised in multiple forms, by various stakeholder groups, for years. The work of stakeholders providing feedback has at times been intentionally misrepresented as supporting the exam.
/What can you do? Write and call your state board. Tell them to vote no on the EPPP-2. More info, including templates and contact information for your board can be found here: rallystarter.com/r/1320/stop-th… And tell your friends, colleagues, and professional networks to speak up!
