ABC News just said Matthew Perry estimates he has spent $9 million on recovering from his substance use disorder an y'all expect Appalachians living in poverty to do it on their own.
I come from a city where estimates have guessed 1 in 5 of our residents live w/ substance use disorder. We dont have enough beds or resources to help those who want to get sober. If you think poor people have a better or the same chance as rich to get a bed first, you are wrong
Here is a thread of stories I wrote during a trial which shows how Appalachia, specifically Huntington, WV, became ground zero of the opioid crisis. The opioid crisis is a national issue, but we have been disproportionately hit. That’s why my tweet is Appalachian-focused.
Before us, it was Black communities impacted by the crack epidemic. The “War on Drugs” turned 50 last year and we are all suffering worse than ever when it comes to issues it was supposed to “fix”. gpb.org/news/2021/06/1…

So excited to celebrate with my fellow West Virginia journalists at the @wvpress awards tonight and look back at the work we did in 2021. @mckennahorsley @FredPaceHD
Brag, but I won three 2nd place awards this year. The first is in Service to the Community for my coverage of the Huntington/Charleston opioid trial last year.
herald-dispatch.com/news/pillbilli…
I also won second place for Best Breaking News Coverage for my coverage of the Ruth Phillips case. She was sentenced to serve 7 years in prison after admitting to stealing > $4.7 million in federal funds from River Valley Child Development Services. herald-dispatch.com/news/child-dev…

Despite a big win last month in court, the Big Three opioid distributors have agreed to settle remaining West Virginia opioid lawsuits for $400 million over 12 years.

herald-dispatch.com/news/wv-cities…
As they appeal the ruling tossing out their case last month, Huntington and Cabell County get nothing in the settlement losing out on about $37 million. Huntington and Cabell County walked so the rest could run. Don't @ me.
The $400 million is about twice of what West Virginia would have got if it had been allowed to participate in the national settlement the opioid distributors reached earlier this year. Read the story for more details.

People have been asking my opinion, so I’ll give it. I don’t think Cabell and Huntington carving their own path was a mistake. The information that came out of the trial was just as valuable as the money it will take to abate the crisis in our area.
Putting the spotlight on those who mocked us as Appalachians died was important, IMO. Settlement after settlement has been reached, with the most excruciating details concealed. We deserve the truth, if nothing else. herald-dispatch.com/news/pillbilli…
Without this path, the public would not have a full understanding of the millions of pills that had been pumped into the area, which we fought for along side the Washington Post In court. herald-dispatch.com/news/65-millio…

Former WV Delegate Derrick Evans is set to be sentenced at 2:30. I will keep you updated on this thread. herald-dispatch.com/news/former-wv…
Evans faces up to five years for his role, but prosecutors are only seeking a three month prison sentence. Defense want him to avoid prison all together.
The case is moving too fast for me to keep up with tweets.

With enrollment down 19% at Marshall University compared to five years ago, the school is focusing its efforts on how to adapt to shifting expectations of higher education across the nation.

herald-dispatch.com/news/smith-set…
The warning issued during Monday's press conference was of an “enrollment cliff” projected for 2026, which will be the peak of high school students graduating since birth rates in the United States have declined in recent decades.

But Marshall has a plan.
McKinsey & Company - which entered into a nearly $600 million nationwide settlement for consulting services given to Purdue Pharma, which has been accused of creating and fueling the opioid crisis - will help Marshall figure out the nuances of that plan.

After a federal report proposed last month cutbacks at facilities across WV, Iraq War vet Zoe Morris worries what is to come for vets who find it harder to find affordable opportunities for health insurance and those who need the community the VA brings.herald-dispatch.com/news/iraq-war-…
In 2003, she was deployed as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom. While she got her wish to see the world, she worries about the implications her deployment — which included working at and near burn pits — could have on her future health.
"The Global War on Terrorism in vet number is about half, but we’re still here and we’re still going to have those issues. War is not going to end anytime soon. Having that system in place, as someone who still has more than half my life left, is just beyond words," she said.
