The state of Spanish #ENS domains. A thread 🧵
First of all, it’s important to mention that there are a few important differences in the nature of the Spanish vocabulary that affect ENS buyers, and ultimately the demand and value of Spanish words.
1. Unlike in English, almost all Spanish adjectives (and some nouns) differ from masculine to feminine, and from singular to plural. An adjective must agree with the noun (or pronoun) it describes as well as the amount of things it is describing.
For example:
A male 'teacher' is called 'profesor' and a female teacher is called 'profesora'. In English the word 'teacher' doesn’t change.
A 'rude' male is called 'grosero' and a rude female is called 'grosera'.
A male 'executive' is called a 'directivo' and a female executive 'directiva'.
Something 'new' is called 'nuevo' and several new things (plural) is called 'nuevos'. If that thing (or things) is feminine, it’s called 'nueva' or 'nuevas'. In English it always stays 'new'.
You get the point, many Spanish words have multiple variations depending on what it is
that it describes.
More variations is not necessarily a bad thing, it’s actually more precise at describing it, but at the same time it divides the posible buyers of a word into its multiple variations. It decentralizes a grail, and ultimately its value.
2. There are 21 countries with Spanish as its first language, and each one of them has its own unique vocabulary.
In Spain, eye glasses are called gafas, in Argentina they are called anteojos and in Mexico they are called lentes.
The majority of the vocabulary stays the same, but
the % of words that change by country is greater than that of the US vs Canada, England & Australia.
This makes some Spanish ENS grails subjective to each individual. For someone in Spain the ultimate ENS grail for car is coche.eth, but for someone in Colombia it’ll be carro.eth.
3. The Spanish vocabulary is filled with accents (á).
Historically, words with accents were not allowed when registering a web2 domain, email or username. Even today many sites don’t allow it. Every time more and more applications allow it, but…have we gotten too used to it?
Time will tell, although it might be a good idea to start diversifying your portfolio if you haven't already (some versions with accents & some without) just in case the market ends up disagreeing with you.
Average income matters, but so does crypto adoption.
Yes, it’s true, the average income in Spanish speaking countries is lower than in English speaking countries. The amount of expendable income that someone has certainly has an effect on the amount he can spend/invest in ENS.
However, when you look at global crypto adoption data by country, often the poorest countries are the ones leading in crypto adoption. There is a direct correlation between a country’s wealth and the urgent need for cryptocurrency use.
The countries with the weakest and most unstable or inflationary currencies are the ones with highest crypto adoption, and many of them are Spanish speaking countries.
Check this out:
- Spanish speaking countries in top 35 wealthiest countries (by average income): 1 (Spain)
- Spanish speaking countries in top 35 countries on crypto adoption (by % population that owns crypto): 6 (Colombia, Argentina, Peru, Mexico, Ecuador, Spain)
Mass adoption doesn’t mean that the average Juan will spend multiple ETH in an ENS domain. Mass adoption means millions of people will register a domain for $5 while wealthier individuals, investors, entrepreneurs and companies will spend the bigger bucks on premium ENS domains.
There are 389 million native Spanish speakers (vs 527 million native English). The market is there, and it’s big. If not, why would juegos.com sell for $10 million or autos.com for $2.2 million?
If you’re worried that your Spanish ENS domains aren’t selling because liquidity is not quite there yet, take it as a sign that Spanish domains are currently highly undervalued. If you believe in the future of crypto and ENS,
Spanish domains might just be the best long-term investment opportunity in ENS today. On average, the Spanish version of an English .eth is 50-100 times cheaper.

If you expect to register a domain for $5 today and sell it for 1eth tomorrow, then this journey is not for you.
But if you don’t mind sitting on your domains for 1-2 years, you should get on board 🚀
I own around 200 Spanish domains and have never sold any. I price them at what I think they will be worth in 1-2 years, not their current market value. And 0 shame in doing so.
I’d rather hodl my grails for 2-3 years than making a 0.05eth profit now.
