1/ Unai Emery's arrival to #AVFC 🟣🔵 is an incredibly exciting time. I've already talked about his resume and tactics (see below) so this thread takes the proverbial microscope and looks at specific areas where I think he - alongside his staff - will help
2/ For a VERY long time now, Villa have been a team with either no identity or an inconsistent one. Most recently, Dean Smith's situation was a tough one because he was transitioning a Championship squad to the PL, with a heavy, heavy reliance on one player (Jack Grealish)...
3/...while Steven Gerrard's side was a group of talented individuals playing in the dark. Emery's obsessive focus on detail and his need for players to share this obsession will be an immediate wake up call for everyone. Their game's IQ will rise because of it. So straight away,
4/...I look at McGinn or even Matty Cash, w/ an incredible amount of talent + athleticism who I believe still has more to learn strategically. Pervis Estupiñan, for example, developed so quickly under UE. Cash can have a similar rise. Every pivot mid will also learn more.
5/ Emery's tactics have evolved so much since the last time he was in the PL and midfield is key. Almost always, UE's Villarreal's possession is dependent on the relationship between the defensive line and the two CM's. They are the magnet. So Bouba Kamara - still only 22...
6/...is going to explode. Douglas Luiz will also learn a lot. If I had a penny every time I heard a Villa fan say, "DL can't play 6...put him as an 8!" I'd be NSWE right now, not them. Well, guess what. Emery can help him be both.

Then there are the players who are just...
7/...waiting to turn into dynamite. Step up, Emiliano Buendía, Leon Bailey and Ollie Watkins. When I interviewed Arnaut Danjuma earlier this year and asked him about Emery, he couldn't even put into words how much he has helped him. There is such a focus on detail but also...
8/...a motivational push that all talented attackers need. He can do the same here.

I also think you can teach an old dog new tricks and Coutinho will be better for his arrival. I have also chatted to PC in the past before and he is a shy person, someone who needs one-on-one...
9/...advice more than anyone. Of course, Gerrard provided that but it was more as friends and former teammates and that's not the same. Emery will talk to him like a caring professor, advising not on his strengths, but his weaknesses.

Then you have the likes of...
10/...Emiliano Martínez, who already knows him. I personally think he should be captain. It's a perfect fit - but also, EM's ball-delivery (which looked good vs. Brentford) will improve as UE wants his keepers to act as strong, possession-centric players.

Finally, I go back...
11/...to what UE said earlier this year, when he took Villarreal to the SF's of the Champions League - which they had no business doing: "I am better prepared now to take on a job in the Premier League."

I fully believe it. Let's get it.

Finally done with #HouseoftheDragon and I gotta tell ya, there are many things about it that make me like it even more than GoT. Part of it is the single focus on one family, which is very Sopranos like. Other factors such as how the power revolves around two women who
had to fight so much to get what’s theirs. Performances: tremendous. As I’ve said before, all of them kick some serious ass, especially Matt Smith’s Daemon. Steals every scene. I will say, however, that Rhys Ifans’s Otto was marvelous. Emma D’Arcy kicks ass but i gotta say…
…Olivia Cooke. My god. What a performance. Killed it.

Great stuff. Can’t believe we have to wait so long. Filming doesn’t start till summer of next year 😭😭

Anyways - 👏🏽 👏🏽 👏🏽

Copa America kicks off tonight as 🇧🇷 kick off a depleted 🇻🇪 and then 🇨🇴 face 🇪🇨.

Remember, the format is different. Two groups of 5, everyone plays four times and only 1 team of each group doesn’t make knockout [I know, I know]
Obviously, the usual excitement of this tournament runs deep with me, always hoping for the best out of 🇵🇪. In 2019, along with SI, I co-hosted a show for Telemundo and had a BLAST. I love this tournament.
This summer, however, I can’t help but feel so conflicted for obvious reasons and how the continent continues to be hit by the pandemic, notably Brasil, the host nation. To host a tournament, with this sense of negligence or empathy, hurts. A mess from a CONMEBOL perspective.

Since I started this career, one of the biggest things I’ve talked about in regards to the modern game is fatigue, both mental & physical. I truly believe we’re asking too much of these players, demanding incredible things w/ not enough recovery time.

Something needs to change.
In terms of this game restarting: I commend both squads WISHING to play & carry on in honor of Christian, but I have to say that this is a situation where senior officials should have stepped in & say, “No. Listen. We appreciate the way you want to honor your teammate, but no.”
You can see how distraught they are while warming up. I really respect them but mentally, they’re clearly not in the right mindset. Should have been reset for tomorrow morning.

Copa América: As Brasil get ready to open the tournament on Sunday, their opponent Venezuela have confirmed 10 positive covid cases, which includes 5 players. The group waits for second test.
+ just to add, CONMEBOL has allowed unlimited replacement call ups for the tournament, knowing this kind of thing would happen…as we saw with Copa Libertadores and River Plate.
Busy day for 🇻🇪 who call up 16 players, mainly from domestic league and already based there. 🇧🇷 face 🇻🇪 tomorrow at 5pm ET.

1/ The Donnarumma to PSG news is such a bewildering decision from Leonardo for obvious reasons, but once again - as I find myself doing it almost every season - I have to say it out loud:

It’s an absolute insult to Keylor Navas.
2/ I’m not even going to waste this thread with his resume to justify how good he is. Let’s be perfectly clear and keep it 100: Him being a brown Costa Rican is part of the reason cause you know damn well a white European doesn’t get treated with this type of disrespect.
3/ Yes, according to reports, Donnarumma’s arrival doesn’t mean his exit, but that doesn’t matter. Think of the message you’re sending to Navas. “Listen, thanks for what you’ve done so far but we want to spend a lot of money on another GK just cause we’re still not sure…”

1/ I purposely didn’t comment on the “Latino temperament” thing yesterday because if there’s one thing I’ve learned on this site, it’s that the worst type of discourse usually occurs immediately after something happens, followed by attacks and noise instead of a chance to learn.
2/ Don’t get me wrong, I’m 100% guilty of that, so I’m trying to do better & this situation called for it. I also teach a diverse range of journalism students every year & the one thing I always try and pass on, when it comes to conversations on social, is PRODUCTIVE ENGAGEMENT.
3/ First off. Jim Beglin and I have become friends on this site and aside from his public apology we have talked. I am not going to get into the actual conversation but I can tell you he feels terrible and most importantly, he is here willing to LEARN and that to me is the key.
