THREAD OF PRIME MINISTER JUSTIN TRUDEAU’S GREATEST ACCOMPLISHMENTS

Please share this thread widely to show as many people as possible the awesome things this Prime Minister and his government have done for Canadians.

Most successful progressive leader in the world.
1. NATIONAL CHILDCARE PROGRAM 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦

This is one of my personal favourites. In my eyes, it really cements PMJT as a feminist leader who boosted the economy with a transformational program.

$10/day childcare has lowered childcare costs for Canadian families by thousands of dollars.
Such a great economic investment as well:

1. Helps women return to the workforce after thousands of women stayed at home to take care of their kids during lockdowns

2. For every dollar invested into the program, up to $6 is generated in economic return

cbc.ca/amp/1.4374820
And he implemented it in all provinces and territories in just under a year - even when 6 of the premiers in those provinces are usually staunchly opposed to the introduction of any kind of social program.

That’s leadership. That’s political skill.
2. CANADA CHILD BENEFIT 👶🏻👧

Under the Harper government, there were three separate programs to help families with the costs of raising kids under 18.

The Trudeau government harmonized these programs into one and made it better: it’s called the Canada Child Benefit (CCB).
The CCB introduced by the Trudeau government has reduced the number of children in poverty by nearly 75% since the beginning of Trudeau’s time in office.

SEVENTY-FIVE PERCENT.
3. LIFTING OVER 1 MILLION PEOPLE OUT OF POVERTY 🏠

The Trudeau government has lifted over 1 million people out of poverty since 2015.

This was after the Trudeau government introduced the country’s first-ever Poverty Reduction Strategy in 2018.

healthenews.mcgill.ca/canadas-povert…
4. LEGALIZATION OF MARIJUANA 🍃

In October 2018, the Trudeau government legalized the sale, distribution, and simple possession of marijuana.

The benefits from doing so have been enormous. No longer are people locked up for smoking or possessing small amounts of marijuana.
No longer are minorities disproportionately impacted by criminal laws surrounding the use of marijuana.

The legalization of marijuana has also added another massive stream of revenue for government services.
PMJT said that the intent of legalizing marijuana is not to promote recreational use of it, but to “better protect kids from easy access to it and to remove the criminal elements that were profiting from it.”
5. HELPING SENIORS 👴🏻👵🏻

Our seniors built this country. They deserve to be taken care of in their retirement. Since 2015, the Liberals have:

- restored the age of eligibility for Old Age Security (OAS) and Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS) to 65, after Harper raised it to 67
- increased the OAS by 10%

- increased the GIS by 10%

- one-time payment of $500 in 2021 to OAS-eligible seniors aged 75+

All of these actions combined have helped prevent 100,000 seniors from plunging into poverty, and have lifted nearly 50,000 seniors out of poverty.
6. EXPANDED THE CANADIAN PENSION PLAN (CPP) 💵

The CPP is a world-class pension program and is a source of national pride. It serves us very well in our retirements.

PMJT’s government boosted the amount of income that the system replaces from 1/4 to 1/3.

Huge increase.
7. REBUILDING THE MIDDLE CLASS 📈

Of course, PMJT’s economic plan has been to rebuild and grow the middle class. How has he fared?

The share of Canadians making less than half the median income was rising before PMJT took office. Since he won in 2015, it has decreased by 15%.
Also, the share of after-tax income going to the bottom 40% of earners has gone up under Trudeau, after being stagnant while Harper was in office.
8. GENERATIONAL INVESTMENT IN INFRASTRUCTURE 🏗️🚧

One of PMJT’s greatest policy accomplishments, but has gone completely under the radar.

In 2016, the Liberals launched the Investing in Canada Plan, which commits over $180 billion over 12 years for infrastructure across Canada.
This is for wide-ranging infrastructure projects: from public transit to trading ports, broadband networks to energy systems, community services to natural spaces.

To date, the Plan has invested over $126 billion in over 84,000 projects, 95% of them completed or underway.
To see all of these projects across the country, check out this cool interactive map: infrastructure.gc.ca/gmap-gcarte/in…

Also, remember when the US media was going nuts over Biden’s bipartisan infrastructure bill?

Yeah, Trudeau’s plan is BIGGER as a percentage of GDP than Biden’s!
In sum, folks, this Plan is a BIG DEAL! It is fixing and upgrading and creating infrastructure that helps Canadians and rejuvenates their communities, especially from an economic perspective.

Massive deal.

OK. Moving on.
9. RENEGOTIATING NAFTA 🇨🇦 🇺🇸 🇲🇽

The Prime Minister and his team had to deal with the US’ worst president in its entire history. And probably the worst president in terms of Canada’s interests as well.

A massive issue was, obviously, when Trump threatened to rip up NAFTA.
NAFTA provided enormous benefits to Canadians and our economy. Created millions and millions of jobs, reduced our unemployment rate, grew our GDP, etc.

When Trump wanted to sign a US-Mexico free trade deal to replace NAFTA, PMJT and his team intervened.
Eventually, after many, many rounds of negotiations, the free trade deal was modified to include Canada, and is known as CUSMA in this country. It completely replaced NAFTA.
For starters, PMJT and his team saved Canada’s automotive industry with this deal.

They brought an end to extremely punishing and unfair tariffs on our steel and aluminum with this deal.

They ensured that Canadians won’t pay any extra fees for digital products with this deal.
If you remember, the Conservatives under Andrew Scheer (with influence from Stephen Harper) wanted Trudeau’s government to give into Trump’s demands.

PMJT and the Liberals held firm, and got us the best possible deal in the face of bullying from the Trump Administration.
Don’t believe me? Listen to this video of Brian Mulroney, where he totally praises the work that PMJT and his team did while renegotiating NAFTA:
10. CLEAN DRINKING WATER ON 80% OF RESERVES 💧

A core commitment from PMJT during the 2015 campaign was to lift all long-term water boiling advisories (LTBAs) on reserves across the country.

To ensure that all Indigenous peoples have access to clean drinking water.
So far, 80% of these LTBAs have been lifted, and 20% are left.

The work isn’t done yet, but thanks to the work of the PM and his government, thousands and thousands of Indigenous peoples now have access to clean drinking water.
Check this map out to see where the LTBAs have been lifted, and which ones still remain: sac-isc.gc.ca/eng/1620925418…
11. GIVING LAND BACK TO INDIGENOUS PEOPLES 🤝

This is another one of the PM’s greatest accomplishments that has flown under the radar. The amount of land settlements and actual land given back to Indigenous peoples is quite extraordinary.
As of March 2018, the Liberal government has negotiated settlements on more than 460 specific claims. There have been a lot more negotiated since; the data is just too scattered at the moment to compile all of the negotiated claims into a list.
Let’s not forget that the Trudeau government resolved the 2020 pipeline and railway protests by negotiating with the Wet’suwet’en hereditary chiefs to transfer jurisdiction over their land back to them.
12. PRICE ON CARBON 🌳

Yes. The “carbon tax.” The Supreme Court affirmed it was not a tax - rather, a regulatory price, but anyways… we’ll just go with carbon tax.

It is helping Canada to reduce our emissions while also putting money back into the pocket of 8/10 families.
8/10 families get more money back into their pockets through the Climate Action Incentive Payments (CAIP).

90% of the revenue collected by the government from the carbon tax is paid through the CAIP, the other 10% goes into green energy initiatives.
13. CANADIAN EMERGENCY RESPONSE BENEFIT (CERB) 🦠 💵

For me, the way the Liberals responded to the (ongoing) pandemic solidifies PMJT as one of the top 5 PMs in our country’s history.

Particularly because of CERB. An investment to help Canadians weather a truly terrible time.
CERB was made and rolled out at lightning speed by the public service. Public servants deserve huge credit for that.

And Trudeau and Morneau deserve huge credit for having Canadians’ backs; ensuring that they didn’t starve and that they could pay the bills while in lockdown.
CERB is an example of how fast government can work to address a problem. It wasn’t a perfect program, but it helped out millions of Canadians in a big way during one of the toughest times in our nation’s history.
14. VACCINE PROCUREMENT 💉

On the topic of the pandemic, vaccine procurement in this country was a raging success. While pundits were quick to call our country’s vaccine procurement strategy a failure in early 2021, that wasn’t the case at all.
By June 2021, 60% of Canadians had one dose. By August 2021, 60% of Canadians had two doses.

By July 2021, the Trudeau government had secured enough doses to give out doses to whoever wanted one.

beta.ctvnews.ca/national/coron…
The PM made a promise to have enough vaccines to inoculate all Canadians by September 2021. He beat that goal by 2 full months.

Canada got our vaccines and rolled them out much faster than the vast majority of countries. Look at this cool map to see: theguardian.com/world/ng-inter…
These vaccines prevented the deaths of thousands and thousands and thousands of Canadians.

We are so lucky to have these vaccines and so lucky to have a government that secured them pretty fast.
15. BANNING GUNS 🔫

In April 2020, a mass shooting occurred in Portapique, Nova Scotia. This horrific event prompted the Liberals to ban thousands of assault-style guns. Approximately 1,500.

Nobody is allowed to sell, transport, import or use these guns anymore.
PMJT: "These weapons were designed for one purpose and one purpose only: to kill the largest number of people in the shortest amount of time. There is no use and no place for such weapons in Canada."
Just last week, the Liberals banned handguns.

From now on, people cannot buy, sell, or transfer handguns within Canada, and they cannot bring newly acquired handguns into the country.
The Liberals are also increasing funding for the Canada Border Services Agency after a decade of Conservative cuts in order to prevent the smuggling of guns across the border.
16. BOOSTED IMMIGRATION 🆙

Did you know that under PMJT, 🇨🇦 welcomed the most immigrants in a single year in its history?

Yup. 2021. Previous record holder was 1911. And the next couple of years (2022 and 2023) might surpass 2021.

canada.ca/en/immigration…
We need immigrants. Our birth rate is super low in this country and we need immigrants because of the labour shortage we have all across the country. Immigrants are amazing for our labour force and economy.
PMJT’s record on refugees is fantastic. You’ll remember the influx of 40,000+ Syrian refugees into Canada because of the Trudeau government’s policies. Additionally, Canada has welcomed 100,000+ Ukrainian refugees since January 1, 2022.

cp24.com/mobile/news/tr…
In 2020, nearly HALF of the refugees who resettled around the world landed in Canada.

Read that again.

Yep. Because of our Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau. An incredible and welcoming immigration policy.
17. AID TO UKRAINE 🇺🇦

The Trudeau government has been one of Ukraine’s biggest supporters in the war against Russia. The fight for democracy is being fought in Ukraine right now, and so it is imperative for Canada to be helping out as much as we can. And we are.
Since February, 🇨🇦 has disbursed $2B to 🇺🇦 for financial assistance. $600M in military aid. $320M in humanitarian aid. Countless sanctions against 🇷🇺 regime collaborators. As of Friday, 🇨🇦 is the first country in the 🌎 other than 🇺🇦 to offer a bond for purchase in support of 🇺🇦.
Of course, Zelenskyy thinks Trudeau is pretty cool.
According to this cool map, Canada’s total financial commitments to Ukraine rank 4th in the world as an absolute number, and 9th in the world as a percentage of GDP.

ifw-kiel.de/topics/war-aga…
That’s it, folks. The end. 17 things that I think are the Prime Minister’s biggest accomplishments since he took office in 2015.

Let me know if you think I missed anything.
Such an outstanding legacy. And the best part is that he has so much more to do. National pharmacare & dentalcare, more action on the environment/green economy, etc.
Of course, none of these accomplishments would be possible without the tireless work of his caucus, cabinet, or the public service.

Or without an engaged population ready to vote, knock on doors, and make phone calls for the Liberals!
