Why is the Philippines getting stronger and stronger typhoons every year? And what can we do about it???

A 🧵 on the impacts of climate change, in case you didn't know:
Stronger typhoons is a product of climate change. Accdg to Mei et al. (2015), "A warmer sea surface generally provides more energy for storm development and thus favours more intense typhoons."
This map by McKinsey shows the likelihood of severe typhoons in Asia by 2100. The Philippines will experience 1.25-3 times more severe typhoons by the end of the century.
Mei et al. found that typhoons would even get stronger by 14% by 2100.
In the infographic by @wunderground you can see that 5 of the strongest typhoons to make landfall in recorded history are in the Philippines and 4 of them (Haiyan, Meranti, Bopha and Megi) are recent, between 2010 and 2016.
In this infographic by @bworldph that 16 of the costliest and deadliest typhoons in the Philippines started in the mid-2000s and the top ones happened in the 2010's.
Madami. The gov't has to invest in proper disaster risk management and climate change adaptation. But actually, may scientific definition ito...
"Climate resilience is the ability to anticipate, prepare for, and respond to hazardous events, trends, or disturbances related to climate."
What the Philippine national and local governments should realise is that climate change is here and now, it does not only require response when we experience disasters. It requires proper planning as the world continues to warm.
Local governments should know the risks in their area and how to plan for that.
Hold the government accountable.
Sabi sa research ng Oxfam, climate change is the number one hindrance to overcoming poverty.
The world’s poorest communities often live on the most fragile land, and they are often politically, socially, and economically marginalized, making them especially vulnerable to the impacts of climate change,” Christina Chan, director of the @WRIClimate
“More frequent and intense storms, flooding, drought, and changes in rainfall patterns are already impacting these communities, making it difficult for them to secure decent livelihoods.” Christina Chan of @WRIClimate
Ang mga mahihirap, lalong maghihirap. Ang mga walang makain, lalong walang makain. Ang mga walang bahay, lalong walang masisilungan. Ang mga hirap sa buhay, lalong maghihirap. Kaya magkakadikit ang issue na ito. Lahat ay maaapektuhan ng climate change.
Sorry I realised I said 2021 when I meant 2100. We have science and data and models predicting what happens until the end of the century depending on what actions we do. The best report to read about this is the @IPCC_CH reports. They are public and you can download them.
