There are warnings in many newspapers this morning that suggest Sunak and Hunt have agreed tax rises right across the board in what is described as an attempt to fill the budget ‘black hole’. Alongside austerity these tax rises will be a disaster. A thread on what we should do….
[Please note that this is a long thread. If it appears to stop mid-flow click on the part tweet you can see and more should appear.]
The UK is heading for a recession. A cost of living crisis created by externally created inflation, whether it be Putin’s war or post-Covid supply chain disruption, is the primary cause of that recession. Almost none of it has been created domestically.

Amazon forecast yesterday that it will make sales up to $15 billion dollars less than previously anticipated in the last quarter of this year. That is a due turn of maybe 10% on expectation. Markets were shocked. They shouldn’t be. Central bankers planned this. A thread….
It is staggering that markets did apparently expect consumer purchasing to hold up when the US Fed, the Bank of England and now the European Central Bank are all trying their very hardest to tip the world into a deep recession.
Coordinated interest rate rises of the type we are now seeing central bankers deliver have only one goal. That is to drive down consumer spending whilst supposedly increasing the return to financial capital in the world.

Yesterday I suggested that Sunak was likely to fail. The thread in question got read a lot. Perhaps that was because as the day went on it became increasingly apparent that Sunak’s failure almost inevitable. A thread…
Sunak’s speech as he arrived in Downing Street suggested austerity was coming. The instruction to not smile that he worked so hard to comply with was clearly meant to send out a signal of the severity of the measures he plans.
However, as I noted at the time, instead of achieving that goal it did instead send out the message of a man scared witless by the seriousness of the task facing him.

Rishi Sunak could be a great prime minister. That possibility cannot be denied. Equally, the probability that he will be is very small. A thread…
History does not suggest that many prime ministers appointed mid-term with their predecessor having failed turn out to be great. Sunak has two failed predecessors. That’s really not good.
That Sunak is petrified of the role he is taking on does not help. How do I know he is petrified? First, he spoke to no one during this campaign, not even MPs. Second, his speech to Tories at their HQ yesterday was as wooden as anything Truss has done. He is already overwhelmed.

At the time of writing it seems very likely that Rishi Sunak will become prime minister today. Some thoughts on what we might expect from him seem appropriate. A thread…..
As I predicted, Johnson pulled out of this race. The suggestion that he was ever in it was never reality confirmed. The claim that he had 100 nominations was almost certainly a lie. His suggestion that he will still be back is just a fantasy. He is finished.
So too, I think, are Penny Mordaunts’ chances. I have a fear that she will gain 100 nominations and force a vote, with the racist Tory membership then repeating the Truss fiasco by voting her in against MPs’ wishes. That would create more mayhem. But I hope it doubt it’ll happen.

You raise an important issue @HackedOffHugh. You're reading the right book. @StephanieKelton is great and we talk often but this is a brief thread in response to your question.
MMT is not a policy: it is a description of how money actually works in the economy. I believe that description is right: the choice as to whether you follow all the policy prescriptions like the job guarantee is for you to decide on . There are three key issues though, I think.
First, people are taught markets rule. They don’t. But we’ve had politicians so incompetent and chaotic that they have abandoned decision making to the markets, and especially central banks. The result is going to be a crash due to interest rate rises that are totally unnecessary
