How misinformation is born: The ProPublica article misinterprets a Chinese document's general discussion of "the complex and grave situation" regarding safety, informed by many recent domestic and foreign incidents, as admission of *A* complex and grave situation in the Wuhan lab
The article's translation of the relevant paragraph in the Chinese document is actually not far off ImageImage
But then in the headline and other places in the text, the general situation is changed into *A* situation in the lab: ImageImageImage
A blockbuster is thus born, out of a boring, publicly posted, nothingburger Party document. Perfect material for my lecture tomorrow on misinformation (and motivated reasoning). 4/4
