"Earn your carbs"

What does this mean?

The human body can store carbs as glycogen in muscles and liver, but storage capacity is limited, ~2000 calories worth.

Glycogen is made of long, branching chains of glucose. Image
This is the same glucose that's in the blood.

Carbohydrates are also made of glucose. Some carbs, such as sucrose (table sugar) are made of glucose and fructose.

The function of glycogen in muscles is to provide energy for high-intensity exercise - fight or flight. Image
When you're at rest or doing low intensity activity such as walking, you burn mostly fat.

Humans have vastly greater storage capacity for fat.

A typical person could go for weeks without eating, merely using energy stores from fat.
But muscle glycogen is made for emergencies, like fleeing a mountain lion or fighting an attacker.

Or for high-intensity exercise, such as sprinting or high-intensity strength training.

If someone never exercises at high-intensity, or fights or flees, glycogen is never depleted
Then, when carbs are consumed, and glycogen stores are full, the carbs are turned into fat, and stored.

Someone who does high-intensity exercise depletes glycogen and therefore can eat some carbs with impunity.

Someone who never exercises in this way turns carbs into fat. Image
Typically a person who exercises at high intensity doesn't *need* carbs, unless they do this activity long enough and often.

But they tolerate them better.

Someone who does none of this activity will tend to store carbs as fat.

Earn your carbs.

Oxytocin is a hormone that's necessary for muscle maintenance and regeneration, and it declines with age.

Could increasing oxytocin promote better exercise recovery?

Definitely an interest of mine, as recovery ability also declines with age.

The probiotic bacteria Lactobacillus reuteri promotes would healing in young humans.

It increases oxytocin levels in mice, and appears to promote regrowth of the thymus gland.

This probiotic contains the same strain of L. reuteri used in the studies.

Insulin resistance syndrome

Around 50% of middle-aged and older US men have metabolic syndrome - basically a pot belly with insulin resistance.

They have at least a 3 x greater risk of cardiovascular disease, and a higher risk of all kinds of cancer.

Don't be among them.
How to have good insulin sensitivity and good metabolic health, and avoid chronic disease?

1. Avoid garbage food
2. Eat real, whole food and get plenty of protein.

Steps 1 & 2 will help you to lose body fat

How to finally let go of stress and anxiety (without a Xanax prescription):

After coaching hundreds of men and women, I’ve developed a no-nonsense approach to fight stress and build an ironclad mindset

Short thread:
1. Everyone experiences stress.

Recognize that stress is part of life.

If your goal is to permanently eliminate stress, you have the wrong goal.
2. Identify the kind of stress you're experiencing.

According to Hans Selye, “the father of stress research":

Distress is stress that negatively affects you.

Whereas eustress is stress that energizes you and motivates you to take action.

LDL cholesterol values are almost always calculated, not directly measured.

Low triglycerides make the so-called Friedewald equation, used to calculate LDL, inaccurate.

Yet doctors base their decisions on it.
Example: my recent Friedewald calculated LDL was 110, high enough at my age to get me prescribed a statin.

Iranian equation value: 78. Normal LDL.

If you're being prescribed a statin based on calculated LDL, you might want to look into this.

You lose muscle as you age, and muscle loss accelerates with each decade.

This is a disaster, leading to insulin resistance and poor metabolic health.

When you lose enough muscle so you can't even stand up on your own, you have a big problem, often leading to a nursing home.
Someone who's 80 years old can have lost fully half the muscle they had when they were 20.

After age 50, muscle mass declines by 1-2% a year. link.springer.com/article/10.100…
The solution: resistance training.

But 1-lb. dumbbells are not going to cut it.

Capillary density of muscle is directly correlated with insulin sensitivity, that is, good metabolic health.

The more capillaries (small blood vessels) the greater the insulin sensitivity.

Fasting glucose and insulin are negatively correlated with capillary density
Skeletal muscle capillary density and microvascular function are compromised with aging and type 2 diabetes

Another consequence of aging and high-carb overnutrition to be avoided.

Fortunately, this can be readily accomplished.

How to get higher muscle capillary density?

Elementary: exercise.

The greater the high intensity exercise performance, the greater the capillary density
