My top PhD tip - every PhD student needs to be active on Twitter!

I didn't take Twitter seriously until my PhD ended, and I regret it.

Here are six benefits of a strong PhD Twitter game 👇

@OpenAcademics @PhD_Genie @thephdstory @AcademicChatter @thoughtsofaphd @PhDspeaks
1. I need to clarify what I mean by a strong Twitter game.

For me, it means tweeting your own thoughts every day, being a generous follower, having a legible bio, and writing as you'd speak to your work friends.

Most PhD students and academics on Twitter don't do this.
2. When you put effort into Twitter, you'll reap the rewards.

Make no mistake, upping your Twitter game will take time and effort. But if you use it properly, it's time and effort well spent.

Now let's get into benefits!
3. Have an easy conversation starter

When I'm at conferences I tweet a lot. So many people have come up to me at conferences and said "hey, you're that twitter guy".

Also, tweeting about someone's presentation can be the ultimate icebreaker.
4. Solidify existing connections

While I might've only had a passing conversation with someone at a conference, because of our chat on Twitter, I feel like we're cute friends!

It's not always about new connections, making old ones stronger can be even better.
5. Learn new things

I've learnt so much about my field from Twitter. Random football fans and journalists seem to teach me the most.

Twitter gives you an easy way out of the academic bubble which is super helpful to put your research in perspective.
6. Amplify your research

My most popular academic work hasn't been my best, but it's been shared the most on Twitter.

If you have an engaged following, your research will be seen by so many voices, even those outside of academia!
7. Enhance your brand

Clearly articulating who I am and my interests to a wider audience has led to more writing, research, and speaking opportunities.

By regularly engaging with Twitter, you become a known quantity to prospective employers and the media.
8. Have some fun

I really enjoy using Twitter, that's why I keep coming back to it. I love replying with GIFs or getting a question answered straight away.

If you're going to enhance your Twitter game, make sure you find something fun in all the chaos.
9. If you're a PhD student and take Twitter seriously you'll:

Have an easy conversation starter
Solidify existing connections
Learn new things
Amplify your research
Enhance your brand
Have some fun

Seems like a lot of reasons to get stuck into it!
