Former Russian president Dmitry Medvedev again reiterates Russia’s genocidal goal to destroy Ukraine: EXPLAINER

In front of a map with Ukraine partitioned by its neighbors, he stated that the concept of an independent Ukrainian identity must “disappear for good”: “Ukraine is Russia."

Medvedev shared this map in his Telegram in July 2022, claiming that this is how "foreign analysts" see the future of Ukraine; today, he presented it again at a festival in Sochi.

❓ Here, Medvedev is reiterating the Russian imperial narrative that Ukraine is an "artificial nation" consisting of "Russian, Polish, Romanian and Hungarian lands."

After invading Ukraine, Russian officials have claimed that Ukraine's neighbors plan to partition Ukraine, particularly - that Poland is "planning an invasion."

Russian President Putin regularly brings up this genocidal idea, which aims to destroy Ukrainian nationhood (, ).

The last time he did it was in December 2023 at a board meeting of Russia's "Defense" Ministry. Then Putin said that "many residents of western Ukraine want their territories to return to Poland, Romania or Hungary, and only Russia can be the guarantor of the territorial integrity of the Ukrainian state":
