Since we’re all just sitting around waiting for twitter to implode & feeling bad about the layoffs, how about some #tweetorials?

This one is a fave of mine, inspired by my deep confusion at a conference and @nondogmatist’s kind explanation scribbled on the conference program.
Also, for no particular reason at all, this might be a good week for you to brush up on your Difference-in-Difference methods.

Just in case there’s a paper which uses them that you want to be able to follow………
Another fun #tweetorial is this one by @epidemiolakshmy, who took the time to clearly explain the idea behind one of my #EpiCartoons👇🏼
This #tweetorial is one I wrote for @AmJEpi & explains the Target Trial Framework, as applied in a nice study by @MissLodi 👇🏼

I’m curious how people who say they “cant in good conscience stay on twitter anymore” justify having been on twitter this long tbh.

Yes, hateful trolls feel empowered by the idea of Elon, but they were already here, filling our DMs with hate. Didn’t that trouble your conscience?
“But now being here makes Elon money”

First of all, does it? Sure seems like he’s made a bad financial decision to me.

But secondly, we were always making other people money by being here. Did Jack not trouble you?
Yes, Twitter did previously have some systems for controlling hate.

No, those systems did not stop people from regularly receiving sexist, racist, anti-Semitic, and anti-LGBTQ hate.

Those systems were always flawed and so are we. Wherever we go next, those flaws will follow.

LEARN AN EPIDEMIOLOGY TERM:

Let’s talk about the word “infected” because I’m starting to notice that people misunderstand this term.

And it is a super important concept to know about!
The National Cancer Institute (NCI) is a useful place to start when you want to know more about a health or public health related concept because they have clear definitions.

So let’s start by looking at their definition.
Infection (in-FEK-shun)

“The invasion and growth of germs in the body. The germs may be bacteria, viruses, yeast, fungi, or other microorganisms.” National Cancer Institute definition of “infection” “

Tbh I find it hard to believe there would have been outcry without zoom.

The most powerful people will always find a way to protect themselves.

Then they gaslight the middle class into thinking whatever is convenient for the powerful.
COVID is still happening and most people are back in the office with only minor, if any, mitigations.

But people have been convinced that COVID is done and they aren’t at risk.

There’s no outcry because the gaslighting has been effective.
I also think that it’s important to remember that infectious diseases are about groups of people—if the workers who went on zoom had instead been in the office, their availability to be part of transmission chains would have made low-income, high-exposure workers LESS safe.

THINK LIKE AN EPIDEMIOLOGIST:

How *should* we study cause & effect?

Tensions are high these days, so let’s use an imaginary cause-effect question to learn how it works.
Let’s pretend you’re competing in my new Octopus Games — kind of like Squid Games but less deadly!

The challenge is to solve a puzzle. If we give people unlimited time, everyone eventually solves it in less than 12 hours.

To win, you need to solve it in 6 minutes.
Your buddy says he knows a trick to help you solve the puzzle in minute 1.

Great! But, this buddy of yours always has some new hustle going, so you’re a bit skeptical.

Sorry for the profanity, but is the absolute most batshit study design & analysis plan I have ever seen.

There’s absolutely nothing we can conclude from it except that whoever signed off on this knows nothing about epidemiology.
I overslept this morning so my explainer thread is delayed, but there are also some great threads out there by others.

This one explains the weird “followed up after death” thing they did
This thread does a great job explaining how the data they claim to have had wasnt even the data they actually had 👇🏼

Are respiratory infections secretly preventing cancer? No.

Do small amounts of debris from certain bacteria help prevent allergies & fight cancer? Maybe?

Does infection with certain bacteria & viruses *cause* cancer? Yes, that's a fact!

Infections & cancer, a thread🧵
First, let's be clear: not every bacteria or virus that people can be infected with causes cancer! I'm not saying that at all.

But some bacteria and some viruses *are* known to cause cancer. Let's talk about some of them.
First up: human papillomavirus, or HPV, which causes many different cancers: Cervical cancer, penile cancer, anal cancer, oropharyngeal cancer

HPV transmits by sex so just about any body part you use for sex can get HPV. And if it can get HPV, it can get cancer.
