2/ THANK GOD Twitter has someone on staff who all these major advertisers in the US trust. He can reassure them of the plan for trust and safety in a time where use on the N word has gone up LITERALLY 500 PERCENT.
Only Elno fires him that same day.
Who is left to reassure them?
3/ Elno is a billionaire. He can handle it. He calls a meeting for him to calm down Twitter’s advertisers.
Now, before I tell this part, please understand. Twitter advertising is an afterthought for these guys. A fraction of a fraction. A pack of gum you get at the checkout.
4/ So, in this meeting Twitter’s advertisers have a simple question. “What’s the plan, Elno?”
How is spending millions going to help our brands, when we have every reason to expect hate speech to get worse.
We are talking about the majority of 2023’s revenue. Stakes are high.
5/ Someone competent would have come in with a plan.
Elno did not. He did the same thing he’s done his whole career at Tesla, he bullshitted. He INCREASED their fears.
The meeting went so badly, some brands literally cancelled all advertising DURING IT.
6/ And now, he’s trying to blame his plans for a glorious free speech service on people using free speech.
Because of course it couldn’t be him.
Twitter’s 2023 advertising is nonexistent. That’s why this $8 a month thing is being pushed. He wants YOU to pay for his mistake.
Epilogue:
Elno is now threatening to go “thermonuclear” on these brands - attacking their reputation with his army of right-wingers and Tesla cultists.
This is all self-inflicted. He simply doesn’t have the maturity or discipline to keep Twitter sustainable as a business.

After 70 years of relative stability, democracy is weakening all around the world. Strongmen and dictators are ascendant, and legislatures are weakening.
The real problem is we are in a global information war. It goes on every minute of every day.
And we are LOSING THAT WAR.
2/ What do we do about it? Governments and non-state actors are spreading narratives that have nothing to do with reality.
These false narratives undermine our ability to solve problems, and even democracy itself. We are making dumber and dumber choices.
3/ 4 billion people on earth have access to the Internet. They are the combatants in the global information war, knowingly and unknowingly.
And social media companies are the weapons manufacturers.
1/ Now that @keffals has her phone back after being swatted, we should talk about federal anti-swatting legislation and why we need it.
Amazingly, it is not a federal crime to falsely send a SWAT team
@RepKClark has an EXCELLENT bill on this that should be passed immediately.
2/ The reason state law can’t solve this is the people sending the SWAT team rarely live in the same state. Without federal leadership, we cannot prosecute this.
Also, this is one of those cases where the police and the public have mutually aligned interests.
3/ Police want these laws. Sending SWAT teams on false information opens them up to civil liability and a public relations nightmare. It degrades public trust.
The public should want these laws because no one wants to wake up to an assault rifle in their face like @keffals.
1/ A lot of leftist friends are glib about the right-wing calls for civil war.
I urge you to take it seriously.
Want to share my experience in Mississippi. These calls to violence (technically called stochastic terrorism) ABSOLUTELY result in real world violence and hate crimes
2/ Let me start with a story at @OleMiss about a riot I saw that was narrowly avoided.
The LGBT alliance was scheduled to meet right next to the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. There were about 10x more of them than us.
It started with a yell, “The South Will Rise Again!”
3/ Linguistically, “The South Will Rise Again” is coded language essentially justifying violence, and framing it as the oppressed rising up against the oppressor. Textbook stochastic terrorism.
And before you know it, that comment led to f****t this, and cocksucker that.
FACT: We wouldn’t have had the Civil War if we didn’t keep kicking can down the road on slavery. Cowardly politicians didn’t want to pay a political price, and the problem got worse.
Similarly, we’ve been kicking the can on confronting the Republican Party my whole lifetime.
2/ Most prominent example was aftermath of WMD not existing in Iraq under Bush. Mainstream media seemed certain the fever was about to break.
What’s the harm in humoring them? Same old song about compromise and getting along played, and we were asked to ignore the corruption.
3/ Today’s Republican Party only exists as a factory of grievance. And that near-violent grievance is weaponized by corrupt politicians to stop them from facing consequences.
Trump was not the disease, he was a symptom. We have to face what is sick and dying in our country.
We get a knock on the door today. I random man is driving by the house and sees my 1986 Porsche 911. He wants to buy it. And he starts talking to Frank, assuming it’s his. Whatever, that’s just low level sexism. No big.
2/ He asks to see ar. I love talking about Porsche with people, so sure! I’m not looking to sell it, but I’m always interested to hear numbers.
We walk into my garage, which is obviously a mechanic’s garage with lifts and serious tools. Incredulously he asks who works on them.
3/ I say I do.
Incredulous, he asks where I learned to do that, and I tell him I grew up in Mississippi, where it’s a popular hobby. We’ve moved from low to mid level sexism.
Now we’re talking numbers. I tell him I’d need 60 to even begin to think about selling.
1/ If you are a woman with any level of public success, and you express any opinion about your own equality - there is an right wing ecosystem that will write clickbait articles about you.
Gamergate was 8 years ago, and I *STILL* have people writing these based on Twitter feed.
2/ Of course, any media network needs new stars. So, these right wing outlets have found new women to turn into monsters like @TaylorLorenz and @wiczipedia.
It’s like they create an alternate version of you, based on the most cynical deliberate misinterpretation of your life.
3/ And you’re just powerless to stop it. You just have to accept that you’ll deal with sexists making YouTube videos, clickbait articles, and viral tweets about this imaginary version of you forever.
