Gaia Gear has a weird relationship with Zeta Gundam. It shares some eerie similarities:
* Main characters belong to an organization that is anti-Earth Federation government
* Enemy organization is radical one within the Federation government
* Said enemy org eventually takes over Federation Forces
* Main mecha transforms, can enter the atmosphere on its own
* Post-transformation is in the form of an aircraft
* Beam saber is stored in its thigh and can be used as a beam gun after transformation
* Symbolic for the organization
* Built-in equipment for Newtypes (psycommu/biosensor)
* Names have Greek letters (Zeta and Alpha)
* Main character leaves the org with a childhood friend in the end
* Preview before serialization was Mobile Suit Gaia Gear Char's Counterattack

It's interesting how the staff at Newtype started making stuff up when it came to Gaia Gear (which they say was super popular at the time), including the little diddy about it being "100 years after Gundam." Tomino would go on to dispel that claim... #Gundam#ガンダム
...saying that there was no mention of such things in his writings. NT staff initially pegged it as taking place in the U.C.0180s, but interestingly enough, they included a timeline snippet in their own magazine in '93 as part of their "We Want Next Gundam" article.
U.C.0191: EFF expands Manhunting Forces (MHA) organization.
U.C.0196: Gaia Gear Alpha rolls out
U.C.0197: Afranche Char is welcomed as leader of the Metatron Agency.
*ponders this* Novel continuity and drama continuity?
