Ayub khan (someone’s fav) brought all national intelligence agencies under the direct control of the president and Chief Martial Law Administrator. Basically himself. Hence any criticism of his regime was seen as a threat to national security. Sounds familiar?
Then Zia ul haq being himself expanded the ISI to collect the intelligence on the Pakistan Communist Party and Pakistan Peoples Party 🤷🏽♀️ and received a lot of training to do that thanks to US and soviet war.
In 2008 when Rehman Malik was the interior minister and PPP was in power. They passed a notification and placed IB and ISI under the administrative, financial and operational control of the Interior Division with immediate effect.
The opposition then & the army didn’t like that notifications. Then interior minister Rehman Malik was threatened and brought under a lot of pressure. Because of no support from the rest of the civilians in government, it was reversed within 48 hours.
ISI is said to be the largest intelligence agency in the world in terms of staff but no one knows what the total number of staff is. Anyone can be working for them without anyone knowing.
Imran khan consistently invalidated democratic institutions and empowered security agencies. In his dharnas 2014 he abused parliament verbally, hung dirty clothes on it’s walls but never demanded legislation for ISI,never questioned military businesses & still doesn’t do it.
Until and unless there is a legislation on such a dangerous institution is made which determine the mandate, functions , accountability and powers of ISI, we are allowing what is happening to us to continue happening. 🙏🏽
