To summarize: the republican party is cruel, corrupt, and doesn’t give a damn about you.
I want to do a quick thread on the Supreme Court’s arguments today.
The Voting Rights Act, one of the most important laws ever enacted, is at the precipice of destruction. It is the most deadly step yet in republicans’ march to ending fair elections in America.
If the rightwing Supreme Court destroys what’s left of the Voting Rights Act elections will be rigged. Votes stolen. Majority-minority districts dismembered. The tidal wave of republican suppression laws will crash on us all.
These republican judges have no constitutional basis to overturn VRA.
As Justice Jackson showed, their reading of the 14th Amendment is built on a titanic lie. They simply want to help republicans win more elections.
The republican Supreme Court is on a rampage. Six rightwing judges, elected by no one, are taking a sledgehammer to the pillars of American life.
Democracy is in peril. It’s obvious we must expand and balance the court and I’d like to explain why (🧵)
Expanding the court is about balance. Few Americans know that it has been 53 years(!) since Democrats held a court majority.
Over that time, republicans have appointed 16 justices; Democrats 4.
This court is not a reflection of our country and it hasn’t been for a long time.
The court’s full legitimacy is in question
*5 justices were appointed by gop presidents who lost the popular vote
*Two are credibly accused of sex crimes
*One's wife participated in insurrection
*One was jammed onto the bench days before an election
*One sits in a stolen seat
On the first anniversary of the insurrection on the Capitol, I am not simply mourning. Because Jan. 6 never ended. Our democracy remains under attack today, and I fear we are sleepwalking in the face of grave danger.
What I remember most about Jan. 6, 2021, isn’t what happened during the insurrection, but what happened after it.
When the seditionists were finally removed 68% of the republican caucus voted to overturn the presidential election. They tried to finish the job of the rioters.
Since that vote, republican leaders have not retreated but have expanded their push for ending democracy.
There are now 440+ gop bills across America seeking suppress voting and rig elections. Systemic voter fraud doesn't exist; these bills are a pretext to crush any opposition.
Yesterday a terrorist threatened to detonate a bomb in our nation’s capital unless “Democrats and Joe Biden step down”. He spewed rightwing conspiracy theories and risked the lives of thousands. He is not the first and will not be the last. washingtonpost.com/dc-md-va/2021/…
This terrorist’s ranting is indistinguishable from the election lies spread by rightwing media and amplified by elected republicans. Republicans who lied about the election also invited the Jan 6 insurrection, and I demanded they not be seated in Congress ⬇️
Section 3 of the 14th Amendment was written after the Civil War and bars from government any traitors who would seek to destroy the Union. My letter to House leadership showed that elected republicans trying to overturn the election violated the Constitution.
Today I am again calling on Pres Biden to fire every trump appointee on the Postal board of governors for their silence snd complicity in Louis Dejoy’s corruption wrecking the Post Office.
Dejoy’s chaos and corruption is out of control. A week ago we learned dejoy is using the Post Office to wet his beak and line his families’ pockets. washingtonpost.com/business/2021/…
And a few days ago we learned of astonishing financial entanglements between dejoy and his chief trump-appointed defender on the USPS board. washingtonpost.com/business/2021/…
I’ve been sounding the alarm on rightwing domestic extremism for over a decade.
Back in 2009 I pleaded w/ my colleagues to listen to the warnings. They were tragically buried after Rush Limbaugh and other liars created a firestorm.
No beating around the bush. Coldblooded murderers, rampaging neo-nazis, militia maniacs, and other domestic terrorists have exploded bc trump and republicans have spent years winking at, nodding to, and encouraging their violence.
