It is fashionable in some lefty circles to dismiss the idea that democracy is under threat when we are already living in an oligarchy. But “limited democracy” vs “autocracy/fascism” is a distinction worth taking seriously. #Midterm2022
Saying “democracy is on the ballot” sounds like a Democratic talking point. But it is a FACT that on a structural level, one side (not “the duopoly”) seeks to use institutions under its control to impose minority rule and Orban-style illiberal democracy.
The SCOTUS’s six right-wing justices were appointed by GOP presidents who lost the popular vote in all but one election since 2000, yet they unilaterally stripped voting rights and reproductive rights away from millions and declared money “speech.”
Independent state legislative theory, likely to be approved by the Supreme Court soon, would allow unlimited partisan/racial gerrymandering and voter suppression laws at the state level with NO federal oversight. One more nail in “democracy’s” coffin.
A majority of Wisconsin voters are Democrats. They elected a Democratic governor. But the state is so gerrymandered and the executive rendered so weak by the GOP state legislature that it is on the verge of one-party GOP rule. Other states will follow.
Donald Trump has made it clear that if he wins re-election in 2024, his first act will be to purge the civil service of “rogue bureaucrats” and replace them with loyalists. Same with the Justice Department. That’s what an autocrat does. slate.com/news-and-polit…
Ron DeSantis has modeled how to use the state against both “woke” corporations and marginalized groups, particularly LGBTQ+ people, whose human rights he doesn’t recognize. He’s censored books and curricula. This will be a template for a MAGA autocrat.
You can’t have DEMOCRATIC socialism without some semblance of democracy. Even the limited, corrupt form of democracy we have now is something to build on. If/when the U.S. descends into autocracy, how does the left, a minority faction loathed by MAGA, survive?

Stop blaming “the left” for the record of Republican cop Eric Adams. He has had free reign to pursue his right-wing, “law and order” approach to crime; it’s failed. Lee Zeldin only offers more of the same; why not try something new?
People assume when something goes wrong in NYC, “the left” is to blame when in reality we have almost no power. What power we do have has made life better for tenants, the environment, unions and working people. Lee Zeldin would undo that.
The truth about bail reform is that when you set aside the hysteria, the rumors and the fearmongering, studies have shown that it has led to ZERO increase in crime. Don’t believe Lee Zeldin’s lies; pay attention to the facts. americanprogress.org/article/cash-b…

Cenk has shown that liberals who support criminal justice reform in good times morph into “law and order” conservatives when the threat of crime, real or perceived, affects them personally. An old story.
The impact of crime on liberals explains some of the support for Rick Caruso in LA and Lee Zeldin in NY. Cenk and other fairweather progressives marched with BLM when it felt safe. But when they saw a homeless person and felt uncomfortable? Law and order!
With that said, I’d like to dedicate this song by Phil Ochs to Cenk Uygur (if you haven’t heard it before, you should listen; timely and hilarious):

It’s not “hyperbole” or a “Democratic talking point” to state that the GOP wants to get rid of Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid etc. The conservative movement was FOUNDED in part to undo New Deal and Great Society programs. The coments on this thread 😡.
It’s true that Joe Biden and Barack Obama spoke about the need to cut or privatize Social Security. Unfortunately, neoliberal Democrats post-Reagan adopted elements of conservative ideology. This was a DEPARTURE from 20th century liberalism.
Thanks in part to Bernie Sanders (whose threat to primary Barack Obama arguably helped spare Social Security) and progressives, deep cuts to Social Security and Medicare are once again, MOSTLY, a third rail in the Democratic Party.

New Yorkers: set fear aside for a moment and consider what electing Lee Zeldin would mean for the MANY issues that matter to us. 4-8 years is a long time to be stuck with a MAGA governor. Whether you’re moderate or progressive, is 👇 what you want? #VoteWFP
Have you ever heard Lee Zeldin talk about anything other than crime? There is a reason he prefers not to: because in addition to having no real plan for public safety, he supports a far right agenda wildly out of step with NY. #VoteWFP
Fear can lead to bad decisions. The social and economic impact of the pandemic combined with an ongoing lack of housing and mental health/substance use treatment have increased fear of crime. The answer isn’t electing a “semi-fascist” like Lee Zeldin.

If Christopher Columbus existed today, I’d like to think he’d be universally condemned for committing genocide. But honestly, he’d probably have a lot of fans. His monstrousness hasn’t gone out of style.
I’d like to think Christopher Columbus is still defended and revered out of ignorance and bad history education. This is true to a degree. But maybe he’s also defended because people are still colonialist, imperialist and racist in 2022. 🤷‍♂️
I could see a contemporary Cristopher Columbus being chummy with Kanye West and Elon Musk.

If you support Citizens United, you don’t believe in democracy.
If you support Citizens United, you don’t believe in the spirit of the First Amendment.
If you are a politician or political party and don’t do everything you can to overturn Citizens United/get money out of politics, you can’t call yourself a “defender or democracy.” You are an enabler of oligarchy.
