Yesterday I was arrested by @HertsPolice whilst covering a protest on the M25.
I showed my press card, and I was handcuffed almost immediately. My phone was snatched out of my hand. I was searched twice, held in a cell for 5 hours, and I wasn’t questioned whilst in custody.
It was absolutely terrifying being in a cell with a pad for a bed in one corner and a metal toilet in the other. I was just doing my job.
What’s also terrifying is what this means for press freedom. It was blindingly obvious I was a reporter.
After two days I’ll never forget I just want to say thank you for all of the touching messages of support, not just from colleagues and friends, but also from countless @LBC listeners and people who’ve heard my story. Your words mean more than you know and I’ve read every one.
I’m also grateful to @libdemdaisy for raising the matter in the House of Commons, @_OliviaBlake for submitting an EDM, and to Baroness Chakrabarti for raising in the Lords. Thank you @BenKentish for raising with No 10 and @theousherwood for contacting MPs about my case.
EXCL: Senior Home Office source tells me Home Sec refused to sign off on hotel bookings for migrants at Manston last week “because they were in Tory areas”. @LBC
Source close to Manston claims Suella Braverman only approved three hotels last week which were in Labour constituencies. Priti Patel accused of doing the same when she was Home Sec and “they saw this coming”. @LBC
Braverman has repeatedly denied “deliberately ignoring advice” and Home Office says any claims advice was ignored are “completely untrue”. But is that the same as refusing some hotels but not others? @LBC
