Next up @SeanMcM36258302 lead of perioperative medicine diploma @ANZCA.

Peri-operative Medicine Project.

#NSWACE22
18 years so far to get PoM up and running.

Acknowledges tremendous work of @ANZCA staff, @RossKerridge1 and other pioneers of PoM in Au and NZ.

Taskforce set up in 2005 by Cousins (!).

#NSWACE22 ImageImage
Notes key role of special interest group to avoid turf war issues which could limit progress in peri-operative medicine.

#NSWACE22
Initial working group met in 2015 to work out how to advance PoM in Au and NZ.

Noted there was some training around, but a little patchy domestically and internationally. Didn't fully meet the needs of the patients.

#NSWACE22
Decision to:

Increase focus on PoM within the ANZCA curriculum (every anaesthetist practices peri-operative medicine).

Develop an additional qual with a curriculum, VoP, CPD and exam .

#NSWACE22
(BTW it hasn't escaped my attention that we have Sean McManus speaking, Mike Grocott in the front row, and Ross Kerridge sitting next to me ...they are both nodding in agreement .... oh my, surrounded by perioperative legends here in Terrigal NSW . #NSWACE22).
But how to get different specialists to agree?
What does recovery look like to an anaesthetist compared to a geriatrician?
Some physicians had never been to theatre to watch a fem-pop for eg.... some anaesthetists had never been to a geriatrics ward.

#NSWACE22
(BTW kudos to all involved for engaging in this nearly 20 year project across many specialities, remarkable tenacity and negotiating skills ... #NSWACE22).
Expect most people will take 2 years to complete the diploma, can take 3 years. Launching towards the end of 2023. SM notes that non drs will be able to engage in some modules of PoM.

Maggie Wong and Joel Symons credited for grandparenting process for PoM.

Two pathways:
1. Recognition of exceptional contribution
2. Points pathway (education, teaching, research, clinical practice eg high risk clinics, MDT).

Each individual will be assessed.

(Oh geez ... it's #ACE22NSW .....time for coffee #2 )
Summary of perioperative diploma from @SeanMcM36258302.

For health service budget holders, need an economic argument in the bottom right to change care.

#ACE22NSW Image
What are perioperative goals for 2025?

#ACE22NSW ImageImage
Don’t worry.

Anaesthetists are still cool.

Well sort of.

Ross Kerridge pays kudos to grand parenting process in PoM (old tap on shoulder system not enough). Also notes general public like PoM. It’s common sense. Quality. Gives our community confidence in us.

I’m here in Terrigal at the NSW ACE Spring meeting.

Co-convenor legends Dr Frances Page and Dr Douglas Gray poised and ready to open the meeting while everyone gets caffeinated!
I mean, the venue is pretty awful.
First up @mike_grocott who is HERE!!

His enormous CV includes being a junior Dr with Dr Page at Middlesex! (Nothing dodgy apparently! …. 😉

Social Media for Anaesthetists.

Talk delivered at the beautiful Josef Chromy Winery in Launceston, Tasmania, Australia.

#ACE22TAS
Social media is enormous no matter how you look at it. Billions in ad revenue, millions of tweets every day, hours of our time on platforms. Pervasive in our personal and professional lives. Can't separate ourselves from it now.
(In the break one delegate proudly announced that they were in the minority - no social media at all.

I asked them if on WhatsApp .... yes but that's not social media they said .... 😬 .... we're on it, and we don't even know it sometimes ...)

Meeting Pugh this morning has left me feeling unexpectedly contemplative. Beautiful park, cold crisp Sunday morning, not many people about. Thinking of my many anaesthetic teachers across 3 countries who taught me so much, their wisdom stays with me. On the shoulders of giants.
Went wandering around Launceston….
For some bizarre reason though it would be a good idea to get on a chair lift over a gorge with raging waters below when no one else was brave enough ….
