cannot fulfil their safeguarding duties. They cannot ask the questions they may feel are necessary to ask about the person, because they do not know all the names the person has used. 25/?
This is not nitpicking: the importance to safeguarding of knowing all names a person has used is established. This is why FOR ALL OTHER PEOPLE ALL THEIR PREVIOUS NAMES ARE LISTED ON THE DBS CERTIFICATE. 26/?
The BBC have put together a Profile piece on @BBCRadio4 which contains several factually inaccurate claims about @KemiBadenoch.
*@BenInLDN has never exposed a leaked recording. @VICENews repeatedly refuses to release the recording they claim to have.
*Government work on conversion therapy has not been paused. The Minister has only just been appointed and yet to receive advice on the public consultation.
*Toilets at @Policy_Exchange were not relabelled by Kemi Badenoch. @MForstater has pointed this out.
*Hamish Badenoch is not a banker. He works on workplace transformation not banking.
*Kemi did not publish the Sewell report. It was an independent report to government.
Today @BrandonLewis announced new policy for housing trans prisoners: 1. prisoners with male genitalia should no longer be held in the general women’s estate 2. ditto for male prisoners convicted of a sex offence
BUT.....
3. This is not a blanket ban: exceptions will be permitted
So. What do we have here?
As a ministerial statement that the current policies leave women at risk, this is significant & important.
However, this is not a solution. Male prisoners can still be held in women's prisons..
And the clear statement that this is not a blanket ban means that even those with intact male genitalia & convicted of sexual offences may still be held with women. The existing policy already states that anatomy & conviction must be considered, so it is unclear what this adds.
Where change of gender occurs, safeguarding breaches occur from each side of the safeguarding process: 1. Children who 'change gender' are placed in risky situations by organisations seemingly as a direct way to facilitate that change 1/?
e.g. support groups with poor moderation and/or where participants come from inappropriate age groups including both children and adults, research projects that are operate outside parental consent 2/?
2. Adults who 'change gender' can exploit safeguarding loopholes in the DBS system which mean that the safeguarding rules that apply to everyone else don't apply to them 3/?
We now have the clearest possible indication that Keep Prisons Single Sex is making a difference.
We are being heard. YOU are being heard.
What we do works so we must keep up the pressure. To do that, we need your help:
Keep Prisons Single Sex is the only organisation whose sole focus is women in prison & the criminal justice system. We will never deviate from this & we will never compromise.
Whether it’s Amendments in the House of Lords, giving evidence to Scottish Parliament, discussions with Ministry of Justice and Scottish Prison Service, or producing in-depth research & reports, your support will help us to fight on.
