Namor talking about how horrible the "colonizer" language of Spanish is in the grand scheme of things is gonna rub A LOT of people wrong and making them sit with that and unpack that... SPANISH fluency is just a form of elitism that is used to deny you're identity.
White mexicanos are represented in popular media and not brown ones. Mestizo and Native Mexicanos are very much alive and well in Mexico and in the US. If the LA situation didn't teach you that colonizer languages aren't the only languages for Mexicanos... Then.... you know now
When folks APPLAUD white actors for speaking Spanish, but laugh at Mexicanos and Latinos who speak broken Spanish it pisses me off. Spanish was not a language we were allowed to speak in the States for a LONG time. To this day artist's and people get physically assaulted for it
I'm proud to be represented on screen by two Mexican born actors ( Lupita and Tenoch) and not just an atypical fair skinned actor. I'm glad that Latin/Mexican news media is showing their ass right now about their racism and elitism. Having experienced it myself
Also to be VERY honest with you, I've been working on a SPECIAL project for a YEAR+ to engage with and unpack mestizo and Native Mexican genealogy. I'm scared and nervous. Imagine so many others who will be doing the same after this movie.
I hope that everyone who starts to ask and tackle these observations can do it and really understand how to engage with these parts of their culture in a productive way. In the next 6 months...We'll be seeing this play out and Latin/ Mexican media won't know what to do
#RyanCoogler handled NAMOR in a way that isn't a TROPE, but also doesn't hide from Mexican/ Latino colonization and the implications of that. Most people will center around the SPANISH language or Spaniards and all I'm gonna say is if that's what's making you mad... Have a seat
