There seems to be an intellectual type today whose whole explicit approach is “I can’t be bothered to learn about crypto, or Africa, or China, or the metaverse, or Islam, or QAnon or anything really”. And this is regarded as wisdom?
The anti-intellectual type has for some reason become the mainstream intellectual
I mean it when I say it’s the mainstream position. Certainly the most common and the most popular
I could write wildly popular columns arguing “frankly I never had the time to find out what this crypto thing was” or “there is nothing to figure out in what China wants, everyone knows what they want” And so on
What is essentially a confession of imbecility has come to mean a sophisticated knowingness about the world

I wish it wasn’t true but I can’t see how the war in Ukraine will not become permanent, a new Syria. That was my anxiety at the beginning as I could see we would not be able to stop it once it started
Ukraine will resist and survive and it is still absolutely critical some parts of its territory are recovered to assure its long-term viability. But peace with a genocidal Russia seems to me impossible
Peace with Nazi Germany was impossible. Peace with Russia is impossible. Everyone with a mind can see that. As for a fundamental change of political outlook in Moscow I also exclude that in my lifetime

We now live in the kind of environment where the US grows its trade with China 8% every year (historical record by a huge margin this year) but Germany cannot sell Covid vaccines to China or risk being called a traitor to every sacred value
China owns stakes at five US ports
Few people know about these facts because there is no army of commentators dispatched to supervise them

I think Twitter will probably get in legal trouble by abolishing verification. Let the lawsuits (some criminal) begin
Certainly when Twitter demanded I get verified they made it sound like a legal requirement

I published a piece a few months ago arguing the war in Ukraine showed the end of global American hegemony. I think that’s essentially correct (the thesis aged well and will continue to age well)
It would be a serious error of judgment for the US to think all its partners worldwide are … Ukraine. There is no one else like Ukraine
