"What has passed for objectivity in our industry has been reverence for power...truth is not partisan."
Great speech by @nhannahjones this morning at the inaugural Democracy Summit.
Now, we've got Steven Levitsky, co-author of How Democracies Die, describing the electoral road to authoritarianism, and the characteristics of political parties that are edging toward autocracy.
"We believe this is a reaction to multiracial democracy."
"Either the United States will be a multiracial democracy in the 21st century, or it won't be a democracy." — Steven Levitsky
"The cult of personality... and victimhood is central to authoritarians... The double image of the victim and the brute."
"First, pay attention to patterns. Stop acting like stuff is new when it's a pattern. Second, no false equivalences..."
@jasonintrator begins his remarks with five key points. Too many words for one tweet, but good stuff.
"There are no neutral words...there is no neutral language... What is the neutral term for lying or fascism?" — @jasonintrator
"Be very careful with the language you use because there are people who are trying to get you to adopt language that erases the real problems." — @ruthbenghiat
"We are losing skilled people who understand how to administer elections...nobody wants to be threatened and have people come to their home...I don't know if we have figured out how to grapple with that fear and brain drain." — @SIfill_
"We need to reestablish accepting electoral loss as a democratic norm... We should not be congratulating people for conceding defeat. That should be the basic expectation." — @AveryElections
What an incredible resource. Learning about the @hu_blackpress archives from Brandon Nightingale.
"American democracy is threatened by theocracy," @AntheaButler says.
"Religion is a foundational piece in the destruction of democracy in America," @AntheaButler says. "And if you don't understand that, maybe it's time for you to get a new job."
Ta-Nehisi Coates speaks at the inaugural Democracy Summit.
"When we talk about a center for journalism and democracy, I don't know where else you'd want to be other than an HBCU...the tradition of Black journalism is the tradition of truth telling."
Now at the inaugural Democracy Summit, we are hearing from @JodiRave, @krforde, and @Maria_Hinojosa on the issue of the ways mainstream journalism has mishandled the issue of white nationalism.
.@krforde is describing a number of examples of newspaper leaders actively engaging in terroristic campaigns to end Reconstruction in post-Civil War southern states. Absolutely essential and horrifying history.
"We need a journalism that is clear and transparent on our values...to be pro first amendment is to take a political stance." — @WesleyLowery
"We are talking about having a single standard of supporting democracy and how it operates for both parties, and if in the application of that standard one of the parties has turned anti-democratic, it's incumbent we report that." — @jayrosen_nyu

NEW: Conservative hotelier Monty Bennett and a California-based company that offers protesters-for-hire have seeded an “astroturf” right-wing influence network that has kicked into overdrive to push controversial “Dallas HERO” city charter amendments. 1/
Over the last four years, a number of astroturf groups have been active in Dallas, including a pro-police group called Keep Dallas Safe and a dubious racial justice group called Dallas Justice Now that critics have deemed "fake." Who created and funded them has been a secret.
2/
These astroturf groups have lent their support to the controversial Dallas HERO Initiative city charter amendments, which critics say could cripple Dallas city governance. The amendments are supported by Monty Bennett and are opposed by every city council member in Dallas.

NEW: I've received evidence of an arrest for illegal geese harvesting in Springfield, Ohio. But it wasn't a Haitian immigrant who was arrested. It was a white man named Brian Comer, who shot two geese with a shotgun on a golf course.
It turns out that Trump and Vance were not wrong that people are illegally hunting wildlife in Springfield, Ohio — they just accused the wrong person.
Here's the full case report regarding the illegal geese hunting incident in Springfield, Ohio, in which the defendant admits to killing the geese without the necessary permit.
SCOOP: The email address of a Senior Advisor to Donald Trump, Jason Miller, appears in the Ashley Madison data leak. The username of the associated account is JJames. Miller's middle name is James. Miller was married at the time, per court documents. More details below.
1/
I was able to verify that the email belongs to Miller via court docs. The Ashley Madison profile associated with the email was created in 2009 with GPS coordinates in southeast Washington D.C. Miller lived in Washington D.C. at the time, per court docs.
2/
Background reports link Miller to an address in southeast Washington D.C. at the time the Ashley Madison account associated with his email was created. The GPS coordinates in the data leak are approximate and not precise, but do they appear to be associated with IP address.
I can independently confirm that the same email address Chris Rufo used to fill out paperwork for his 2018 Seattle City Council candidacy appears in the 2015 Ashley Madison data leak that came years before Rufo was a public figure.
Unclear to me why anyone would have created an Ashley Madison account using Chris Rufo's email address years before he was a public figure.
Chris Rufo blocked me after I pointed out that he is falsely claiming his email isn't in the Ashley Madison leak database. His email can be found via two different searches that can be replicated by anyone.
I acquired the police call report/recording the Federalist published to claim evidence of Haitian migrants hunting geese in Springfield, OH. The Federalist redacted the name of the caller and didn't quote law enforcement, who told me they have no other evidence of such claims.
The call recording I received included the caller's phone number. Their first name is Toby. I called the number and reached a man who sounded like the man on the recording. When I asked if he was Toby, he asked who was calling. I told him I'm a journalist. He immediately hung up.
After I followed up via text, Toby told me he is at work right now and can't be on his phone. I told him he can call me any time today. I look forward to hearing from him.
