"What has passed for objectivity in our industry has been reverence for power...truth is not partisan."

Great speech by @nhannahjones this morning at the inaugural Democracy Summit. Image
Now, we've got Steven Levitsky, co-author of How Democracies Die, describing the electoral road to authoritarianism, and the characteristics of political parties that are edging toward autocracy.

"We believe this is a reaction to multiracial democracy." Image
"Either the United States will be a multiracial democracy in the 21st century, or it won't be a democracy." — Steven Levitsky
Next up at the Democracy Summit, a panel on how propaganda works with @jasonintrator and @ruthbenghiat, moderated by @danielleholley.

#cjddemocracysummit Image
"The cult of personality... and victimhood is central to authoritarians... The double image of the victim and the brute." Image
"First, pay attention to patterns. Stop acting like stuff is new when it's a pattern. Second, no false equivalences..."

@jasonintrator begins his remarks with five key points. Too many words for one tweet, but good stuff. Image
"There are no neutral words...there is no neutral language... What is the neutral term for lying or fascism?" — @jasonintrator
"Be very careful with the language you use because there are people who are trying to get you to adopt language that erases the real problems." — @ruthbenghiat
Now at the inaugural Democracy Summit, a panel on threats to democracy featuring @RachelOrey, @AveryElections, and @SIfill_. Image
"We are losing skilled people who understand how to administer elections...nobody wants to be threatened and have people come to their home...I don't know if we have figured out how to grapple with that fear and brain drain." — @SIfill_ Image
"We need to reestablish accepting electoral loss as a democratic norm... We should not be congratulating people for conceding defeat. That should be the basic expectation." — @AveryElections
What an incredible resource. Learning about the @hu_blackpress archives from Brandon Nightingale. Image
Now for a banger panel with @AntheaButler, @KeeangaYamahtta, and Dr. Greg Carr at the inaugural Democracy Summit.

Butler starts off with a broadside.

"American democracy is threatened by theocracy," @AntheaButler says. Image
"Religion is a foundational piece in the destruction of democracy in America," @AntheaButler says. "And if you don't understand that, maybe it's time for you to get a new job." Image
Ta-Nehisi Coates speaks at the inaugural Democracy Summit.

"When we talk about a center for journalism and democracy, I don't know where else you'd want to be other than an HBCU...the tradition of Black journalism is the tradition of truth telling." Image
Now at the inaugural Democracy Summit, we are hearing from @JodiRave, @krforde, and @Maria_Hinojosa on the issue of the ways mainstream journalism has mishandled the issue of white nationalism.

#CJDDemocracySummit Image
.@krforde is describing a number of examples of newspaper leaders actively engaging in terroristic campaigns to end Reconstruction in post-Civil War southern states. Absolutely essential and horrifying history.
Now for the last panel of the day at the inaugural Democracy Summit about the mandate for pro-democracy journalism, featuring @jayrosen_nyu, @WesleyLowery, @AsteadWesley, and @cassandrajar. Moderated by @trymainelee.

#CJDDemocracySummit Image
"We need a journalism that is clear and transparent on our values...to be pro first amendment is to take a political stance." — @WesleyLowery Image
"We are talking about having a single standard of supporting democracy and how it operates for both parties, and if in the application of that standard one of the parties has turned anti-democratic, it's incumbent we report that." — @jayrosen_nyu Image

NEW: In my first for @TexasMonthly, I dove headfirst into the movement to root out non-existent election fraud in Texas. I found a record of frivolous lawsuits, big claims of fraud with little evidence, and unsettling connections to mainstream politicians.
texasmonthly.com/news-politics/…
One of the leaders of the movement, Weston Martinez, is a preeminent denier of the 2020 election results and a longtime Republican activist from San Antonio who unsuccessfully ran for Texas land commissioner earlier this year. He's also an arbitrator for J6 defendants.
The plan Martinez outlined for activists at an event in Midlothian was to get involved as poll watchers, election judges, or amateur election-fraud investigators ahead of the November 8 general election.

BIG: this relates to my reporting — oil billionaire and funder of the Christian Nationalist right in Texas, Tim Dunn, is directly involved in the same "pink-slime" journalism network that's published stories promoting candidates backed by his PAC.

1/

cjr.org/local_news/pin…
The Tow Center found just under a hundred stories this year across 28 sites (25 of which are Texas-centric) that directly or indirectly advocate the Texas Public Policy Foundation’s policies. Dunn is a major funder of TPPF.

2/
As I reported for @Gizmodo, the same "pink slime" network has run stories attacking renewable energy — a recurrent TPPF line — which were then featured in newsletters sent out by Donald Trump’s ex-campaign manager Brad Parscale.

This Saturday I was assaulted by a man named John Fournace in University Park Texas, while I was reporting on a "Protect Texas Kids" protest. I've since learned Fournace has a criminal history of assault with a weapon, vandalism, and disrupting a school board meeting.

1/
Prior to being assaulted, I was singled out by the organizer of the protest, Kelly Neidert, along with her antisemitic supporter, Ali Jamal, who called me an antisemitic slur. Shortly after, I was attacked by Fournace, who has attended several of Neidert's protests.

2/
Fournace has previously threatened me threatened me, as well as someone he mistook for me, with violence.

NOW: I've just been assaulted at a Coffee Park in Dallas, Texas, by a man who has previously threatened me at a protest. He came up to me without provocation, pushed me twice, and was escorted away by the police who were less than 10 yards away. I'm safe and unharmed.
The protest I came here to report on was organized by Kelly Neidert with Protect Texas Kids. The man who assaulted me has been at several of her protests in the past. The police have asked me to not get closer to the protest The police are now by protest and man who assaulted me. Image
Here's a video of the time just a few weeks ago that the same man threatened me with violence in front of a police officer.

NEW: I recently learned Dallas is home to one of the most prolific Holocaust deniers. His name is John Wear, author of a revisionist history of Nazi Germany and the editor of a Holocaust denial website. He claims the Holocaust was "invented" and the Jewish genocide "alleged."
1/
Mr. Wear, who worked most of his life as a CPA, has been writing in the Holocaust denial space for years. He's currently listed as the Editor of Inconvenient Truth. Wear's book was published by American Free Press. The @splcenter has described both as Holocaust denial groups.

2/
Mr. Wear's book, "Germany's War," argues Nazi Germany was not the aggressor in WWII and describes Adolf Hitler as the "savior" of Europe on the. back cover. One reviewer on Amazon praised the book. "NO communist or Zionist lies. JUST THE TRUTH!"

A story no major outlet has picked up on: a right wing newspaper in Dallas that sued me for calling it propaganda and lost continues to quote/report on a hoax BLM group that was linked to a Republican PR firm, for stories that denigrate public schools and Democratic politicians.
Despite extensive coverage about Dallas Justice Now's link to a Republican PR firm and its dubious roots in Dallas, a right wing propaganda paper called the Dallas Express has quoted Dallas Justice Now on a number of topics.

Recently, Dallas Justice Now has been promoting school choice and vouchers. That happens to be a political issue the publisher of the Dallas Express, Monty Bennett, has been a major donor.
