Hey everybody, this is thread 2 for me from #USCCB22

Bishops will in a moment elect a new president and vice president.

Here's what has happened so far:

Here's a backgrounder for you on how the elections work.

It will answer a lot of your questions:

Gomez is now explaining how voting works. Not sure if he read that Pillar explainer.
Voting will now start.

Here's the ballot: Image
On first ballot, +Broglio got 73 votes. Majority is 119.

They will vote again. Image
+Lori got second most with 37.
+Broglio gets 114 on second allot. Lori gets 45. It'll be a run-off on the third ballot. Image
*ballot.
Broglio elected president of U.S bishops' conference.

Bishops will now vote from the other 9 candidates for a VP.

#USCCB22
If no one gets a majority, they'll do it again, then have a run off if they need to.
There was a problem with the ballot. +Kevin Rhoades was on the ballot twice. So they're doing it again.
Between the two spots on the ballot, +Rhoades had 100 votes.

Well, now we're waiting for things to be corrected.

Bishops are murmuring.

murmur murmur.

+Gomez:

It's not easy to elect a vice president. Bishops laugh.

+Coyne asks how the nominees for secretary will be chosen, but ballot is ready, so Gomez says he'll explain it in a bit.

Voting now.
Because +Broglio was secretary, the bishops will elect a new one tomorrow. The committee on priorities and plans has to choose candidates for that. Word is that they've got em.

The balloting system is not going well. Fr Fuller asks bishops to input their votes again.

#USCCB22
There was no majority on the first ballot, so the bishops will vote again.

#USCCB22 Image
On first VP ballot, +Lori had the most votes, followed by +Paul Etienne.
Ok, +Rhoades and +Lori got the two most votes on second ballot, so there will be a run off.

Second ballot: Image
second (official) ballot. Image
JD note:
If +Lori is elected, he will be too old to run for conference president in three years. That will leave an open election, as was this one, instead of the customary choice of conference VP.

#USCCB22
Archbishop William Lori is conference vice-president.

A surprising move.
This is very interesting, and Ed and I will break it down in analysis and this week on the podcast.

There are numerous implications to this.

Since +Lori is chair of the USCCB pro-life committee, there will be a vote tomorrow to replace him, and also to replace +Broglio as secy.
Bishops will now elect board members to Catholic Relief Services, their global relief services agency.
+Hartmeyer, +Seitz, +Taylor confirmed to the board.

#USCCB22 Image
Time for a break and we'll be back.
By the way, @canonlawyered predicted the election of Lori on our podcast several weeks ago. There you have it.

Welcome to #USCCB22, whose public sessions are about to begin.

I’ll be your livetweeting host and Pillar editor-in-chief JD Flynn.

The public meeting is about to begin. Image
You will notice the bishops are seated at round tables. This is a change, part of a focus on building fraternity among the bishops.

Cardinal Ricard sat on the CDF for years with the knowledge that he had sexually abused a 14-year old girl. He participated in decision-making about the canonical crime of sexual abuse.

His duplicity calls into question the integrity of the Church’s administration of justice.
My opinion: This is a counterwitness to the veracity of the Gospel.

Why? Bc/c if people entrusted with the Church’s justice act with startling duplicity, people will ask if they believe in eternal judgment. And if cardinals don’t act like they believe, others will struggle.
What can be done?

1. Act with integrity.
2. Act for reform.
3. Act with contrition.
4. If you live a double life or don’t believe in eternal judgment, leave the clerical state, for the good of others.

Many Churchmen these days are falling all over themselves to see how many times they can get the word "synodality" into a sentence.

And then there are a few who say that synodality is the singular paradigm through which to understand the Church, and other such things.
This shouldn't surprise us.

Before it was "synodality" it was "accompaniment."

Before that it was "dictatorship of relativism"

and before that, the "new evangelization."
All of those concepts and ideas have a genuine place in the deposit of faith, to be sure.

But it's remarkable how quickly slogans become the predominant motif in episcopal conversations and deliberations.

So sometimes when Max has trouble focusing in Mass, we go to the narthex, light a candle, say some prayers, and go to the bookstore.

Max browses the bookstore for a few minutes, then we go back to Mass.

And he has this one strange habit in there.
When anyone else comes into the bookstore, Max sizes them up, then runs off to the shelves to pick something out for them.

Sometimes a book, sometimes a medal, sometimes a holy card.

He brings it to them, and then I explain that Max picked this out and thought they’d like it.
People usually think it’s cute, and often they buy what Max picked out for them. I often wish he got a commission.

But two weeks ago, with this one lady, things did not go well.
