OMG ENOUGH WITH THE PROUD PARENTS. You all can't have the floor on our behalf, speak over us after a token few phrases, and decide our futures without our input. Cut that %h!t out. #NationalAutismConference2022
This old, straight, allistic, whyte male member of parliament is telling the entire country that his "not-normal" autistic son is great. Well bully for you. How about walking the talk by INCLUDING our voices? This is inclusion 101. What's the holdup, huh?
This next old whyte man, a senator, is dropping "affected by", "living with", "challenged by" autism. We're challenged by this outdated, othering, prejudicial point of view. THIS is what's keeping us marginalized. #NationalAutismConference2022
My national strategy? Free programs that address societally induced trauma, stigma-busting communications, incentives for employment retention at all levels in all industries. That's just off the cuff. Imagine if I actually thought about it longer than a second? Why can't they?
Anti-ableism work is akin to anti-racism work. No need to endlessly go over what needs to be done. Take the framework that exists, build on it, and make some progress. Someone ovary-up and actually do something...something NOT unilaterally harmful. #NationalAutismConference2022

Just a few more thoughts on #AsWeSeeIt because I'll bust if I keep them in...
Harrison says no suit. But apparently that's unimportant because it's "his sister's big day!" JFC how about we show people giving an inch rather than shoving a mile. Acceptance looks like a clean tee.
Violet "thought they were in love". Well, did anyone take time to discuss relationships? Did anyone have a safer sex talk? Or did they expect a grown woman not to have a sex life? The messaging here is so wrong here on such a grand scale. #AsWeSeeIt
This is giving me shades of Blaxploitation albeit with a patently inferior soundtrack. We have the stereotypes, the tokenization, the well-meaning "let me civilize you" white folk, all wrapped up in autistic leads played by autistic actors.
As with "Love On The Spectrum" before this, I'm needing to take frequent rage breaks as I screen #AsWeSeeIt. The infantilizing. The do-gooding. The dismissiveness. Perpetuating that we are odd, difficult burdens only serves to make the audience feel good about themselves.
For the record, casting authentically is great. Great! But without us in creative positions, the narrative is still the same old othering we've seen forever. #AsWeSeeIt
Further, just because autistic people are included, does not magically absolve productions of responsibility. We too live within this "normal", are exposed to the same belittling messages then believe we are less. Being autistic doesn't grant powers of transcendence. #AsWeSeeIt
I finally took an improv class at @SecondCityTO. It was super fun b/c the instructor let me observe rather than interact so I was able to learn a bunch of really useful info. Then came the angry abusive desk clerk who unloaded on me saying I'd been "aggressive this whole time"...
@SecondCityTO When I gave my credit card to pay, he refused to give it back because "collateral" then threatened to call the police. I have no idea what he was on but it was terrible. I told him he could us inclusivity training because he was treading in lawsuit territory. His response was...
@SecondCityTO ...to ask me what my disability was. I told him he couldn't ask that. He then asked the instructor if I'd been giving him trouble then proceeded to comment derisively on my stimming (I was trying to keep calm).
