Sources at Outside (parent company of @outsidemagazine) have told me that the company laid off about 12% of its staff today. An official announcement is expected shortly.
In a town hall with staff today, Thurston said the company would be pausing the @Outsideio NFT project and admitted it didn't go as planned, according to two employees who attended.
By the way, last night I asked Thurston if we could schedule an interview and I have not heard back yet.
To be clear, the NFT project was not the main reason behind the layoffs. I've been told the total investment in @Outsideio was "a very small percentage of operating budget" and "only amounted to the equivalent of one month’s normal operating loss." (2 separate employees.) ...
However, it seems the project underperformed and that may be one reason Outside fell short of its projections. The Outerverse has been a popular topic on here, but I want to make sure everyone understands it's not the primary thing giving the company trouble.
