this has been such a dark day. seeing our closest friends and allies, like @MartinJDocherty, keep fighting for ukraine passionately and persistently at our worst hour makes all the difference and helps to carry on
compared to thousands of queer ukrainians fiercely defending ukraine and europe from fascism on the frontline, i do not deserve my name being mentioned in the commons alongside those heroes — but i am honored to amplify their stories every day.
they are the pride of free world

#russiancolonialism has been using identity wars as a successful 'divide-and-rule' tactic for at least a century now. this example from 1920s central asia just bonkers, but also sounds too 2022
this is from an exceptionally brilliant work by douglas northrop exploring the nexus of gender and colonialism during the russian rule in central asia
on darkest days i cheer myself with a reminder that, unlike other colonial empires, #russiancolonialism was born out of self-hatred and a non-stop desire to pretend they are someone else
founded as a settler colonial outpost of the kyiv rus, moscow always wanted to be ukraine. to claim our ancient history, to steal our integrally european identity, to appropriate our culture that dates back thousands of years
ukraine founded russia. as a far-away colonial outpost where you'd sent the worst of the worst as the ultimate punishment. and russia is scared shitless that the rest of the world will finally find out. they even stole their name from what belongs to ukrainian history
as mixed ukrainian i embrace us manifesting our diversity to make foreign folks see that being ukrainian is not about skin colour or ethnicity. it's about set of values, diversity included. but also to have our own decolonial moment to push back against foreign racial stereotypes
boxing ukrainians into a fascist stereotype of what ukrainians should look like paved the way for this genocide. but foreigners projecting their own racial cliches and identity wars onto ukrainians hinders our attempts to stop it. it carries the water for #russiancolonialism too
russia has a long history of using identity wars to gaslight and manipulate its way to imperial domination. inventing artificial identity constructs and then using them as excuses to colonise, assimilate and genocide entire nations
despite having the majority identifying as white, ukrianians have been facing ugly racism during centuries of #russiancolonialism rule and were denied any white person’a privileges. russians call darker features of most ukrainians “inferior” to this very day.
i personally learned what racism is like for the first time during brief time living in moscow. despite being a mixed roma-asian-georgian-ukrainian dude, i am quite white passing.
but i was never white enough for russians.
during winter and on clean-shaved days i’d be daily harassed by russians with “khokhol”, racial slur for ukrainians - mostly for my accent, and darker features.
