Valid argument we should accept & respect hugely different cultures hosting a World Cup.

Not sure respecting Qatar's attitude they couldn't give a fuck about the lives & deaths of migrant workers, who have made up 90% of popn since 2010, is a good thing.
As @tariqpanja's brilliant reporting detailed yesterday, Qatar is far from the only place where migrant workers are dying in their thousands in shit exploitative conditions. Hello Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Malaysia, to name just three.
@tariqpanja If you really think this is any kind of justification for perhaps 3,000 to 8,000 foreign workers dying in Qatar since 2010 while working on the nation's infrastructure projects, then head to an dictionary of modern slang and look up 'whataboutery'.
@tariqpanja We don't know definitively how many foreign migrants have died on these projects because the Qatari authorities refuse to say, despite having the data. They have employed multiple PR firms and law firms to lie and obfuscate on their behalf.
@tariqpanja This investigation, months in the making, was published in September. The World Cup starts on Sunday and if ANYONE from Qatar 2022 wants to debate this thread with me in public before then, please come forward.

Wasn't even intended to be a 🧵. But there you go. Strike while the iron is hot.
Qatar 2022 have reportedly paid $150m to David Beckham to shill for their World Cup. They have also paid millions to lawyers (hello schillingspartners.com!), dodgy PR firms (wave portland-communications.com) and umpteen small operators to lie and spin for them.
If any of these PRs, lawyers or spin folk working for Qatar want to get together in any public forum before the World Cup starts and talk about Qatar's lies and obfuscation about corruption and death and their 2022 World Cup bid and tournament, let's do it!
None of the 4-5-6 Qatar 2022 PR people I know and have dealt with over past 12+ years or more recently would be allowed to engage publicly. Supreme Committee CEO Hassan Al-Thawadi won't because he's a well-rewarded state-paid coward with no answers. 🤷

This time last week, Fulham were ditching sponsor Titan after executives were proved fake & included actors and a punk singer. Guarantees of 480% annual profits were nonsense. This 🧵 turns attention to opaque Man City betting partner 8xBet. 1/n
Before we get to 8xBet & Man City, last week’s story led to an Australian senator, James McGrath (@SenatorMcGrath), raising my investigation in Aussie parliament, saying he was embarrassed that Oz-based Titan were ‘dodgy as hell’ & called for answers

2/n
Turning 8xBet, I starting looking at it after @JournoAndy, @jckkrr, @PhilippeAuclair & @MenarySteve wrote for Josimar in September. (And after I got out of hospital after heart surgery). This flagged serious concerns about 8xBet: josimarfootball.com/ghost-in-the-m… 3/n

Short 🧵 on Matt Hancock declaring on I'm a Celebrity that he is now simply seeking "forgiveness". I write this as someone whose 47-year-old wife, terminally ill, died in a hospice the day after testing positive for Covid, in December 2020.

1/n
Hancock wasn't responsible for Helen's death. Nor responsible for me having only window visits for an hour or so each day for last 9 months of Helen's life. But he WAS responsible for decisions that led to deaths of 10s of 1000s, not least in care homes. 2/n
If I were the relative of somebody in a care home who died from Covid, thanks to Hancock's decisions, when realistically your relative might have lived for years, I would be ABSOLUTELY FUCKING LIVID about it. 3/n

Netflix's four-part documentary FIFA Uncovered", released today, is worth your time. A proper history of the corruption and its roots back to 1974. With new interviews with some of the most corrupt sports officials of our age, saying they did nothing wrong.
Alongside a cast of massively dodgy FIFA folk mired in corruption, and Gianni Infantino calling the FIFA of 2015 a "criminal organisation" (irony), is quite a bit of the brilliant @david_conn explaining the complex stuff to newcomers
@david_conn There's an extraordinary part where Qatar's Hassan Al Thawadi, Secretary General of the Supreme Committee, denies ANY corruption in winning the bid (yeah right) and says he got depressed with criticism after winning the bid, virtually crying. Erm ...

Premier League clubs have seen a spate of dodgy sponsors. I've been investigating a Fulham sponsor, Titan. I can reveal that today, having been presented with our findings, Fulham have TERMINATED the deal.

CC: @FulhamSuppTrust @tomjgreatrex

🧵 1/n
@FulhamSuppTrust @tomjgreatrex A number of supposedly key employees at Titan Capital Markets don't exist, and were portrayed in promo materials by actors & models. EG: Chief technology officer 'Scott Gibson' was in fact Daryl, a punk singer and voiceover artist from Malaysia.

2/n
@FulhamSuppTrust @tomjgreatrex Titan agents, pushing what was in effect a pyramid scheme of 'educational' materials and FOREX investment opportunities, mainly in really poor countries, "guaranteed" profits of 7% a fortnight and 480%+ per year.

Earlier this year, I wondered to what extent it might be possible, using official Qatari data published by the Qatari Government, to answer the Q: How many people (foreign workers) have died during Qatar's preparations to host the 2022 World Cup?

🧵 1/n
One reason this seemed a valid question was because Qatar's "Supreme Committee" had set their own, extremely narrow, criteria, for which deaths "counted" and which deaths didn't. 2/n
If you were a foreign worker who died within the footprint of one of the World Cup's eight stadiums, you counted; if you died on a highway servicing that stadium, you didn't. Yes, this is simplification. Supreme Committee simplification. 3/n

Big story breaking

spiegel.de/sport/fussball…
The new @derspiegel piece says the PL investigation into MCFC, now into a fourth year, is focussing on these three specific things. Incendiary stuff.
This should be non-paywalled. Loads of new document links. Man City declined to comment to @derspiegel ...
