Hindustan Machine Tools (HMT) was incorporated in 1953 by the Government of India as a machine tool manufacturing company. A watch division came up in Bengaluru in 1961.
If you suffer from #CollectibleLust, the first HMT hand wound mechanical watch is probably the most wanted collectible watch in the mechanical watch collector community.
Trust me, there is a BIG community one in India!
It is said that Pt Jawaharlal Nehru (now blamed for all the problems that ail our country) dedicated the first batch of hand wound watches to the the people of India – and this the “Janata” line of watches was born!
Maybe true, maybe false…but makes for one heck of a story!
The demand for sturdy mechanical watches grew across India.
In 1972, Watch factory II was set up manufacture Automatic Day Date Watches with Japanese Technology.
Later, factories were also set up in Srinagar, Tumkur and Ranibagh.
Over the course of many years, HMT completely acquired the technology to build mechanical watched and was producing 100% components in-house.
Aatmanirbhar FTW!!
Frankly, this is a great achievement in Horology.
Almost all of the HMT factories have produced some iconic watches.
As an ode to Nehru, the Bangalore factory produced the HMT “Jawahar”. If you ask certain collectors (me, me, me!) this is the most stylish HMT watch ever made!
The HMT “Janata” that we met earlier was widely manufactured in the Tumkur factory and came in multiple designs.
The HMT Chinar that signified Kashmiri tree came from Srinagar, and Ranibagh factory came up with the much sought after Janata export variant that was sold in Japan
Which watch sold the most?
Govt - No data are available.
The popularity and sex appeal of the HMT pilot has endured. It is not officially known if these watches were actually issued to pilots in the IAF, but there were certainly sold to them in officer’s canteens across India
Similar to the Pilot, there are many stories about how HMT jawan and HMT Sainik were issued to the Indian soldiers in the Indian army!
All HMT hand wound movements use accurate, precise movements that are shock proof and one of the best value for money movements in the industry.
The purpose of creating an Indian company was to signal a self-reliant, robust, and hardworking Indian identity.
HMT was also known for creating watch lines based on popular names from India -Pradeep, Yashwanth, Kiran, Sanjay, Akbar, Prashant, Vijay, Sujata (the first ladies watch), Asha, Swarna…the list goes one. Across religion and across regions, HMT had covered the most popular names!
HMT also pioneered in creating unique designs like the HMT rakhee that incorporated different and complicated movements like a pointer date.
They also created a braille watch.
Automatic model HMT Kanchan was also known as the "dowry watch".
There are stories of people lining up outside HMT showrooms with letters from various political leaders recommending that a Kanchan watch be given to the bearer of the letter.
No Kanchan No marriage.
Though world over the quartz and digital revolution impacted mechanical watch manufacturers, HMT did come up with cool digital and quartz watches.
With economic liberalization, market competition, mismanagement, and complacency, HMT gradually declined and shut all its factories
Today, a company that has sold more than 100 million watches sells its watches only online hmtwatches.in
If you actually are interested to know about its heritage and buy watches over-the-counter they have a museum in Bengaluru.
Before signing off: Hobbyists create creative custom dials for old HMTs and usually very proud about it. Here is a custom HMT created by the author. 10 points for guessing the city that it is paying a tribute to?
To end this thread, I believe that every Indian should own a HMT. Simply because it is a damn good watch for the price.
Also, HMT was aatmanirbhar before aatmanirbhar was cool!

Classic pulp fiction influenced English reading Indians so much that in the iconic song “Mere Sapno Ki Rani Kab Ayegi Tu” you can see Sharmila Tagore ignoring Rajesh Khanna by burying her head in Alistair Maclean’s “When Eight Bells Toll”
"Pulp fiction" is a term used to describe a genre of writing, predominantly across America in the early 1900s. The writing covered horror, sci-fi, detective, and war stories with larger than life characters.
These are all the ingredients that Indian film makers like!
A direct influence of pulp can be seen in another film “Shalimar”. An Indo-US production, Shalimar is inspired by Chase’s “The Vulture is a Patient Bird”.
Main marke bhi maroonga nahi; tumhare andar zinda rahoonga" Dilip Kumar in Mashaal..
Dilip Kumar was an actor par excellence. Today, a 🧵honoring him.
He was quite a good singer. Check out this clip of him singing during an interview.
Though born as Mohammed Yusuf Khan - he took the name Dilip Kumar to avoid getting beaten by his father, who was strictly against films.
His father was friends with Basheshwarnath Kapoor, father of Prithwiraj Kapoor and would constantly berate him for his son's career in movies.
When Dilip Kumar started working in films, he felt that his father will not be happy with his choice of work.
He was given 3 options:
- Yusuf Khan
- Dilip Kumar
- Basu Dev.
He rejected Yusuf Khan & left the options to the others.
He saw his "name" in an ad 3 months later.
The 1500s were crazy. A lot of utterly random stuff went down in that century.
Do you know the insane story of the "Miracle of 1511" protest in Brussels? A thread🧵
Credit to: @atlasobscura
The Miracle of 1511 in Brussels was a "festival" in which the locals built 110 snowmen (or snow persons? or snow sculptures of humans?) in various pornographic poses.
Like, majorly deviant snowporn.
Normally when someone says snowman, you'd think of something cute like this:
Not the locals in Brussels.
They were unhappy in the cold winter of 1511. They saw the rich living comfortably and found it unfair since they had miserable lives.
Brussels then was part of the Netherlands and governed by the Habsburgs, the largest royal European dynasty.
Dec 13, 2001, a white Ambassador passed through the gates of a parliament complete with the 'lal batti' & relevant permission stickers.
One person found that to be suspicious. We should be thankful to Kamlesh Kumari for that.
A 🧵
The car instead of slowing down or maintaining speed, suddenly increased its speed.
Equipped with only a constable's baton and a walkie-talkie, Kamlesh Kumari started following the car and spotted 5 men, all heavily armed head towards the building.
As soon as she noticed it, she raised an alarm - shouting as well as on the walkie talkie.
This first step from her gave the CRPF personnel a few additional crucial seconds to tackle the terrorists.
Dr LM Singhvi initiated the first "Lokpal Bill"? The Bill -- based on Scandinavian model -- aimed to create a strong anti-corruption law.
He coined the term ‘Lokpal' when PM Jawaharlal Nehru asked Singhvi to indigenise the term "ombudsman"
🧵on Dr. Singhvi
Dr. LM Singhvi was also the President of Supreme Court Bar Association and founded Law Day in 1979. Today this is celebrated as Constitution Day every year on November 26.
In addition to being an accomplished jurist and a writer, he was also globally recognized for his legal scholarship.
He was involved as one of the consultants in the drafting of the constitutions of Bangladesh, Nepal and South Africa!
Legendary Physicist Paul Dirac named the subatomic particle "Boson" to commemorate the contributions of Satyendra Nath Bose.
Bose knew Bengali, English, French, German & Sanskrit.
He was a scholar in Physics, maths, chemistry, biology, philosophy, arts, literature, & music.🧵
The most important achievement of Bose is his association with Einstein, while he working on quantum physics and relativity theory, he wrote a paper on deriving Planck's quantum radiation law and sent to Albert Einstein who recognized the importance of the research.
Einstein translated it into German - it became the basis for many discoveries in the field of Physics.
Bose-Einstein condensate was an outcome of Bose and Einstein's prediction of a state of matter of a dilute gas of bosons.
