I spent the last day talking to smart folks who know Elon to try to grok why it feels capricious and what the method is to the seeming madness. Here you are for those who care and for those who don’t, good for you for ignoring chaos monkeys nytimes.com/2022/11/18/tec…
1. Twitter will not collapse imminently. Probably. It’s a resilient system and things are backed up. But it’s less failsafe and more prone to attacks by hackers who have an easier target. Elon is a gambler and he is betting on odds that fewer staffers will handle. Risky obvi.
2. He is also counting on users to put up with inconveniences like you can’t get your archive or user count. Tech users are used to glitches and they might not leave yet over small jams. He’s probably right even if it’s a sucky attitude toward consumers. Does he give a fuck? No.
3. Moderation firings? He is hoping to build an AI system that replaces them that will not work well now but will presumably get better. And will costs a lot less, which is the move most logical. Does he care about the damage in the interim to users, advertisers? He does not.
4. All the hand waving meanness & fetid stunt tweeting? It makes folks come look & grows usage, even if it is to see the traffic accident. The look-at-my-frantic-antics is called marketing or snarketing as one Twitter user put it. Growth at all costs? That sounds familiar.
5. The indiscriminate firings? All tech is bloated and so is Twitter and he’s counting on the cuts to remove those who don’t revere him. Then he’ll pack up the circus tent and move it to a more malleable state like Texas, where the pols will suck up like a Hoover on steroids.
6. Does he care that you think he’s an amateur/asshole/wackjob/chode while doing it? He does not. The brand is Elon and always will be that is what you know now more than ever. If it works, he’s done it ONCE AGAIN; if not, it’s mostly OPM and who cares if the Qataris lose $.
7. In that vein, a chance to own the media/critics/pols who don’t fellate him is an added bonus? Trolling works as well as inspiring & your sad concerns of decorum & decency do not interest the Silicon Valley I know. Move fast & break things? Destroy things is more like it. Fun!
8. Did I mention marketing? As Trump uses outrage to raise money from suckers, Elon is doing much the same to focus the attention on Twitter. You can’t buy this kind of advertising & the crazier the tweeting, the better. Oh let’s do a poll to see if Donald should return! Burn.
9. Silicon Valley is cheering him on, whether they say it out loud or not. The tech bigs have lost a step of late for reasons mostly their own fault. So his obstreperous obnoxiousness is welcome & encouraged. He’s a bloated champion but he’s still swinging. Plus 🚀 & 🚘 are cool!
10. He still needs revenue and quick. Blue checks nonsense didn’t work. Payments a zillion miles away. Enterprise services too. Advertising is even more fucked. That said, will tech shore up its own & will bankers let him off the hook & will we forget his ugliness? You betcha!
11. I’m still not paying $8. Fuck that.

A few things: 1. Depending on how much critical staff has left & where — it’s possible tho not probable the service could shut down at any time & for a short or long time. Relax as it used to do this a lot with the dreaded fail whale logo (see old & new one). It usually restores.
2. That said, I downloaded my archive recently — and you should as it is a record of you. It is likely that there are big security issues & your info could get hacked. This is also not uncommon, but a pain. If you have a credit card loaded in, be on alert. washingtonpost.com/technology/202…
3. There are alternatives like Mastodon, Post.news, LinkedIn, Insta, TikTok, but they’re all different and is not easy to recreate your social network here elsewhere. In fact, you will not. Accept this. Btw Twitter is not going away either — it may just get suckier.
Ok Tweeps: 1. Twitter is not going to end tonight, tho Elon is doing his level best to make it so. 2. There will be alternatives tho it will be hard to get a new network going, even if the software is great & it is well thought out. 3. Get on the list at Post.news
It is a startup from the Waze dude @noam and I think he is a thoughtful person wanting to create a fun and substantial space for news discovery, convos and differing tho respectful points of views.
While I admire the folks at Mastadon, it is too hard for most folks. Here is my page at Post
FFS: Now a food fight. Sigh. Almost all tech firms overspend on free food for their employees. Now they need to cut back since it is an expensive indulgence. It’s not a big reveal he thinks it is. Just cut the expense and move on. FYI: Twitter had excellent food, as did the rest.
Btw this is typical and making it into some particular indictment of Twitter is a reach, tho I always though the food spending was a lot. That said, along with free dry cleaning, free whatever, it created a comfy bubble, which was the point. It is designed to juvenilize staff.
Also: everyone one of the Elon flying monkeys (not my phrase but current Twitter folks) have advocated for perks such as great food and more forever in all their startups, some of which have been more money-losing than Twitter. Standard until needed for a codswallop dunk.
Says the richest man in the world who owns one of the most famous global media brands. No! He’s not powerful at all! Easier to just say sorry for acting so badly so far and, while he’s at it, apologize for tweeting homophobic misinformation at one of the first moments of regime
Btw lots of had hopes that he would revive this brand/platform and I def thought he was one of the few who could do it right as a great entrepreneur and visionary. Instead, indulgent and juvenile posturing, casual cruelties and mean spirited hand waving. But we can see it all.
The media makes tons of mistakes, but an obvious elite slapping an elite label on an entire industry is weak sauce. The voters just said clearly in this election they’re sick of performative aggrieved bellyaching. More signal and less noise is the way to fix what’s broke here.
In fact i got a lot of attagirls re my suck up thread with many people saying they are glad I called out that type of insufferable techie. That said, rather than praise I wish they would be explicit in calling it out like @sacca instead of being worried about the next deal.
Chris did this too when all the potentates of SV went to visit Trump in December of 2016 without publicly calling out his toxic anti immigration screeds. Three who went were immigrants. It is the opening of my upcoming book, but here is the original story: vox.com/platform/amp/2…
Let me say that tech has many thoughtful and insightful people I often have debated and disagreed with over the years. Then there is a class of second and third tier people who suck up to the bigs, riding in the wake and at some point thinking they are as important. They are not.
Many moguls have these remora fish swimming about them, licking them up and down, and thinking they matter. Most smart leaders I know avoid such smarmy yes men. But some let these unctuous enablers remain and everyone quietly snickers at them. You should see my texts I get.
