Today is the 30th anniversary of my company. On the 20th November 1992 I sold my first bottles to and tiny independent shop wine in Harrogate, North Yorkshire. Since then the ride has been amazing.
From my first sales I slowly built up my range of products and my first important break was to get the exclusive UK agency for @chateaufilhot. We still work with the De Vaucelles family today and it been a key part of my offerings for over 2 decades.
At one point I was selling @chateaufilhot to Sainsburys and also working night shifts at the same company to make ends meet. I never told @Just1nHS the wine buyer at the time. Funny we both live in Southern France now!
I moved on and within 10 years my company was accredited by the @WineChallenge as the best wine merchants in #wales and over the following decade we have won best Burgundy Merchants, Best Loire Merchants and most recently Best Small agents 3 times.
From a standing start with now supply some of the UK most famous retailers with outstanding wines from all over the world. But it wouldn’t have been possible without my amazing suppliers and my amazing customers. I would like to say a massive thanks to all of you.
Today our key suppliers like @calmeletjoseph @TournierPatrice @WeingutPfaffl @senoriodearana @trefethenfamily @MarketHelene @mcleod_dumas @ClosGalena to just a few are still growing their presence in the UK and further afield.
Finally I must say a massive thanks to all our customers in the UK and Barbados. We work with too many individuals to name in a tweet but all of you have helped make the company what it is today, I and the little team I employ are grateful for your support.

The UK should be moving quickly to being in the SM and CU. This resolves many of the UK’s issues at the borders. Moreover it sorts out many of the issues in NI.
It’s only now even the hardline right wing Brexit Tories can see the clear damage being inflicted on both imports and more so on exports. I work directly with the import and export systems and they are not coping.
Moreover a cartel of brokers have sent up since brexit started charging jaw dropping fees to clear consignments both in and out of the UK. None of this is helping inflation or every day working people.

The wine trade should have a little read of this document attached. The relevant wine related makes for an interesting read. assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/upl…
Basically the trade has made it transparently clear the original proposal simply was unworkable. The government has understood that, which is good. But is, as ever, trying to fudge the new system with delays and small changes.
Moreover they are are basically saying they expect the importer to check ABV are correct but won’t check them themselves. I simply don’t understand why they won’t just listen to an industry that knows what would work.

Here is how it is in the UK. A minority government voted for by less than 37% of population got control of parliament because of a broken defunct electoral system.
Then after 30 months the MPs of said political party removed the leader because he was so incredibly lazy, corrupt and totally untrustworthy, so they chose someone else.
With just under 0.1% of population being able to vote for this new leader for the UK it was already a stretch at best to say she had any mandate to lead. But the Tories got away with it, and within just 7 weeks she seriously damaged the UK.

This week I was contacted by a retired CEO of a major wine wholesaler. They, unknowingly to me, asked there local MP @JohnPenroseNews if they thought it was acceptable my wine business had been obliged to open a site in the EU to mitigate Brexit costs. Here is the reply.
The letter is from @JohnPenroseNews and then the actual reply from Defra, written by @mark_spencer who seems to be the minster responsible now for wine at Defra. (Letters below).
I read these replies with much interest especially as it would seem I have guided government policy in the abolition of the Vi1, well at least that the impression this letter gives, which is of course not quite true as the entire industry was fairly vocal about this for 18 months

Here’s a little thread on the fun fun fun importers face over the coming months. I have mentioned many times that we use a system called Chief for our imports since January 1st 2021, this was of course due to Brexit. But Chief was turned off officially last night, so what’s next?
Unless you asked HMRC for an extension you must now use CDS for importation of all goods. I should say that despite working on this move for six months we still couldn’t get everything quite there so have taken the extension. But why does this matter?
It matters because like in January 2021 every importer is now having to follow a different procedure. Again HMRC understand that a cliff edge wasn’t the best idea hence the one month extension but still I do wonder if everyone will be ready by the end of October?

Thought of the day. Liz Truss got just under 82,000 people to vote for her. Currently the petition to have general election immediately is going to over take that figure today. So to the Brexit types who love to talk about democracy I do hope they support the petition.
Here is the link again if you missed it the first time. petition.parliament.uk/petitions/6197…
Oh would you look at that, more people don’t want @trussliz to be PM than do.
