The more interesting thing is that the collapse of the soviet union was predicted by defectors nearly 10 years before as a strategy to take away the West's enemy.

Now every communist country on earth is aligned with Moscow.
The fiction "Russia ceased to be communist" continues
but this requires a reframing of history, a backpedaling of long-held positions,
careers built on a carefully crafted fiction,
intel reports suddenly become misinformation and the realization that we've not understood the depth of strategic maskirovka.

the Czech Velvet Revolution was the first modern "liberalization"
where the former dissidents soon found out that the entire coup and revolution was planned by the Communist Party itself.
they took away the name "communist" and the West rushed in to aid

in 1982, GRU defector Jan Sejna warned that the soviets would dissolve the Warsaw pact to lull the West to sleep.
Anatoliy Golitsyn, KGB defector, said the same in '84.
he gave some 150 predictions, 140+ coming true by the mid-90's.

then in 1988,
Georgi Arbatov confirmed this by telling us,
“We are going to do a terrible thing to you,.. We are going to deprive you of an enemy.”

communists in our gov't (& true believers in perestroika) then built up the "former" communist bloc;
as we did with Tito Image
it was Lenin's NEP on steroids; a super NEP if you will.
you remember the narrative.
"Reagan defeated communism."
they let us believe we won the Cold War.
but unlike 'denazification' in Germany, there was no "decommunization."
