I fully agree with those who say oil has been a curse to Nigeria. Many of those question the ultimate value of the reported Kolmani oil find in Northern Nigeria. But I am also practical enough to know three things. First, some countries like Saudi Arabia, Gulf States, Norway were
smart enough to use oil to build their economies, but diversified into other means of wealth creation and also built up savings (reserves/Soveregn Wealth Funds) for the rainy day that have served them well.Secondly, the real secret of the wealth of nations does NOT lie in natural
resources. It lies in economic complexity - the ability to prioritize technological innovation and use it to manufacture complex products that are value-added and competitively produced and then exported to dominate the world trading system. Singapore, South Korea, Japan,
Switzerland and many other of the world's wealthiest countries have NOTHING of value under their soil but have used this principle to create wealth for their citizens. That's why they are rich, but we in Nigeria and most other African countries, with our so-called "blessing" of
natural resources are in a poverty trap. We in fact have the resource curse. 70% of the world’s strategic minerals are in Africa, but the continent’s share of world trade is just 3% in 2022. The third thing I am practical enough to know is that, as Nigeria is currently led and
configured, the dominant mentality of its political leadership is still fixated on natural resources and resource rents. They simply do not share in, & do not care, about the secret of the wealth of nations. Their minds still haven't evolved to that knowledge,or more accurately
the political will to de-emphasize natural resource thinking and shift to real wealth creation. #Worldview

Finance Minister Zainab Ahmed’s comment to @nassnigeria that she was not aware of the Naira redesign by @cenbank should not mislead anyone into thinking the CBN owes her that kind of information. The Bank only needs the approval of President @MBuhari for this particular exercise.
It received that approval. There are only three issues on which, in the CBN Act of 2007, the Bank should obtain external authorization, and only from the President of Nigeria, for its operations: 1. Any alterations to the legal tender (the Naira); 2. any investment of the Bank’s
funds outside Nigeria; 3. the Bank’s annual report. Outside of these, the only approving authorities for CBN operations are its Committee of Governors (note the “s”) consisting of the Governor and the four Deputy Governors , and the Board of Directors of the CBN, which includes

I fully support the @cenbank redesign of the Naira. If 80% of bank notes in circulation are outside the banks, that's troubling. The CBN obviously wants to force all those notes back into the banking system. Those with the notes must surrender to get new ones or else it becomes
illegal tender after January 31 2023. This is also a way to withdraw currency from circulation, an unorthodox way of tightening the money supply since the country is battling high inflation. The flip side is that people who are holding huge amounts of cash outside the banking
system for nefarious reasons will go the parallel forex market to buy hard currency, putting further downward pressure on the value of the Naira as too much Naira will be chasing too few dollars.

I was very disappointed to view the video clip of H.E. Atiku Abubakar @atiku , a former Vice-President of Nigeria, telling an audience in Kaduna that what the North needs is a northerner to be President, and not a Yoruba or Igbo candidate.
I have a lot of respect for Atiku who, despite his flaws (which all the other leading contenders also have) ,I have always regarded as a truly cosmopolitan politician in our country. His reference to his “building bridges” across the country does not negate his clear message
That message was a direct appeal to divisive ethnic sentiment and a denigration of the largest ethnic groups in Southern Nigeria. I think he should withdraw the statement and apologize to Nigerians for it.

The effort by some members @nassnigeria to pass a Bill removing the Governor @cenbank as Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Bank, and to remove the power of the Board to fix the Bank’s budget & set the salaries of its staff is completely wrongheaded and should be dropped.
Such an amendment to the CBN Act of 2007 would finally destroy the institution by disrobing it completely of its institutional independence as enshrined in the Act. It would make the Bank, a statutory corporation under the law, to become a mere Agency or Department of the Govt.
And it would render the bank an open playground for politicians who are the custodians of our dysfunctional governance. Granted, the CBN has already been politicized since mid 2015 when it’s current Governor was appointed. But that is a function of incompetent political

Things are so bad in Nigeria today that whoever becomes our next President -no matter the party- will have no choice but to try (and be seen) to improve the economy and our security. The real question for the electorate is: who will do it better?
Who can break away from the old ways of corrupt patronage, and promote competence and merit? Who can unify Nigeria and create a sense of Justice, equity and inclusion? Who can handle Nigeria’s complexity?
Who can re-establish strong, effective and effective institutions that anchor all successful nations? Who can establish the across-the-board-accountability that is the bedrock of all civilized societies? And who will set the stage for our youth, 70% of Nigeria’s population, to

H.E. @PeterObi paid me a visit yesterday morning at my residence in Abuja. I was very glad to receive him. We discussed the state of the nation and his aspiration to lead our country from 2023. I have always enjoyed a warm fraternal relationship with “Okwute”. We collaborated
closely when he was Governor of @AnambraStateGov and I, also an Anambra indigene, was Deputy Governor of @cenbank . I recall his keen interest in education and our close coordination when, as CBN DepGov, I influenced a corporate social responsibility investment of N1 billion
by the Bank in building infrastructure for Anambra State University in Igbariam (Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University). I also recall H.E. PO’s ’s invitation to me to deliver the 6th Edition of the Anambra State Distinguished Public Service Lecture in 2011 on the subject of
