As Govt aims to rationalize spending, Sri Lankans want more spending on health + education in line with IMF views. #SLOTS polling (Oct/Nov ‘22) finds most prioritize health (66%) and education (60%) for more spending, whilst police and roads most favoured for spending cuts.
Poorer Sri Lankans—also the most food insecure—more likely to prioritize agriculture and fertilizers for more spending.
But richest Sri Lankans more likely to want to cut spending on Samurdhi.
Few differences between ethnic groups once differences in where they live and income levels are taken into account, but most non-Sinhala Sri Lankans (52%) identify military as a priority for spending cuts, whilst only one in ten Sinhala adults do.
