Impacts of the San Miguel Corporation Aerocity in Bulacan are immense, extending across the entire bay. Fisherfolk all the way in Cavite are facing immense hardship as a result of dredging operations for the project. 🧵
San Miguel Corporation has contracted Dutch company Boskalis for its project, which involves extracting large amounts of fill material from San Nicholas Shoal in Cavite to dump in Bulacan. This has greatly disturbed the local ecosystem, directly impacting local residents.
Ever since dredging started, the once clear blue sea has now turned brown. The usual haul of 60 kilos of fish per trip has now been reduced to almost nothing in some cases.
Many residents have switched to gathering shellfish, or even trash for selling to make ends meet.
Rising fuel prices have also made it difficult to venture out further to catch fish. When they do, they risk getting caught for illegal fishing outside of their permitted areas.
As noted by one community member, "Dati, isda ang nahuhuli. Ngayon, mangingisda na yung hinuhuli."
Compensation by San Miguel Corporation has been minimal to non-existent. One example of financial compensation amounted to only ~1 month's minimum wage per fisherfolk.
Boskalis, aside from providing lights for some residents' boats, has not recognized its responsibility here.
On top of all this, residents along the coast of Cavite, from Cavite City to Naic, are also facing threats of demolition due to a proposed coastal road and other reclamation projects in the area. What little remains of their livelihood will be thrown further into jeopardy.
Of course, fisherfolk are not staying silent. The immense hardships from Boskalis's dredging has led many residents to organize and push other community members to also join the fight to put an end to the dredging and reclamation.
This cannot be shrugged off merely as the "cost of development". People are suffering, ecosystems are being obliterated. San Miguel Corporation and Boskalis must be held accountable.
The people are resisting. STAND WITH OUR FISHERFOLK!
