Federal public defender convincingly argues that the FBI used an unprecedented "modern-day general warrant" to seize personal data of anyone who "could have been" in the approximate vicinity of the Capitol on Jan 6. "Defending democracy" by obliterating bedrock civil liberties
The warrant was "fatally over-broad and devoid of particularity, and therefore impermissible under the Fourth Amendment." There was never any particularized probable cause cited by FBI -- making it certain that searches were conducted on people who committed no crime whatsoever
Rather than establishing any basis for probable cause that subjects of the search had committed a crime, the government relied on hypothesis and conjecture that merely "equated presence at the Capitol with criminal activity" -- bizarrely invoking "the pandemic" in its reasoning
In other words, to obtain its general warrant and seize the personal data of thousands of people without establishing any particularized probable cause that they had engaged in criminal activity, the government simply "equated presence to criminality"
But because this Jan 6 investigation is the most important in the history of human civilization or something, and Democracy™ as we know it hangs in the balance, expect these brazen, precedent-setting abrogations of the Fourth Amendment to be largely ignored -- or cheered
Rebecca Fish -- Assistant Federal Public Defender in Tacoma, WA -- did an excellent, thorough job on this motion. Well worth reading documentcloud.org/documents/2316…
As recently as November 3, a brand new Jan 6 defendant was arrested. FBI agent writes that he/she attempted to use the same "geofence warrant" (general warrant) to establish this suspect's criminality, but failed. Then tried facial recognition software, and failed. But pressed on
The suspect's criminal conduct is alleged to be that he walked into the Capitol at 2:50pm, took a selfie with his wife (who was also arrested), and then walked out at 3:00pm. These were the fruits of an extensive investigation by an agent in the FBI's "Joint Terrorism Task Force"

There is no dispute that China's COVID policies are unusually stringent, but I seem to recall Australia had pretty stringent COVID policies at one point, and anyone who protested was instantly labeled a "far right" menace -- rather than brave dissidents standing up for freedom
The stringency of China's COVID policies does not alone explain the sudden 180 degree shift to celebrating anti-lockdown protesters. These sorts of protesters were always presumptively demonized right off the bat: it didn't matter how stringent the policy they were protesting was
True, compulsory vaccination policies in the US/Canada never entailed welding people into their apartments, but you could still reasonably argue those policies were "stringent." I don't recall that preventing any protesters from being called dangerous conspiracy theorists

I listen to plenty of audio material, but I don't buy that it can ever really be on par with how information is processed, synthesized, and stored from full-concentration reading
Can't prove it, but my strong intuition is that reading a text facilitates substantially deeper absorption of the material than if you were to listen to the same text in audio format
I think a lot of people who say they "prefer" audio, or just enjoy it more, say this because consuming audio is ultimately less demanding. To read, you have to actively concentrate the whole time; it can be frustrating. Audio is an external force beaming stimuli into your brain

This right-wing meme that Biden is somehow soft on China is fairy-tale stuff. Biden hasn't just continued virtually all the Trump policies on China -- he's ramped them up. Unlike all his predecessors, Trump included, Biden has explicitly threatened war against China over Taiwan!
Give Biden's new nuclear policy a read sometime: it's all about preparing to wage nuclear war against China. There's a major US military buildup underway right now in the so-called "Indo-Pacific." NATO at Biden's direction for the first time designated China an official enemy
The biggest US/China crisis in decades was instigated this year by a Democratic Speaker of the House, with the implicit support of Biden (despite the shell game they played.) US militarization of Taiwan is massively accelerating. Stop being duped by low IQ partisan know-nothings

Incoming GOP chairmen of the House Armed Services and Intelligence Committees went on ABC to give full assurance that Ukraine funds will continue flowing without interruption. If anything, Rep. McCaul (R-TX) criticizes Biden for not going far enough in sending long-range missiles
Notice that McCaul speaks of the Ukraine war in terms of "we" -- "If we lose in Ukraine" -- perhaps unintentionally acknowledging that the US is a bonafide co-combatant in the war Image
Rep. Mike Turner (R-OH) flips the script and accuses *Democrats* of being the ones who are really wavering on Ukraine, not Republicans -- condemns the 30 House Democrats who signed that phony letter last month for wanting to "surrender" Image

There's long been overwhelming evidence that the 1998 Matthew Shepard killing was fundamentally a drug crime (meth) -- not an LGBT "hate crime." But it's still seen as the paradigmatic example of an LGBT "hate crime." Because once the mythology sets in, evidence becomes obsolete
Here is the ultimate conclusion of the only journalist who conducted a 15 year exhaustive investigation of the case, which included conducting the only interviews with the main perpetrator. (The journalist is gay himself, if that makes a difference) amazon.com/gp/product/B08…
The journalist, Stephen Jimenez, notes that before Matthew Shepard was even dead, Bill Clinton had declared the killing a "hate crime." This was after activist acquaintances of Shepard contacted the AP and LGBT organizations making this allegation based on evidence-free hunches

This clip is really embarrassing. Walsh has made an intense focus on Trans issues his life's work, did a whole documentary on the topic, and admits he's totally clueless about basic data at the core of his entire argument. Resorts to "guessing," and is off by something like 4000%
Ironically, people who are skeptical of giving gender therapy drugs to minors should be most embarrassed by the clip, because if Walsh is the most high-profile media advocate of that position, he damages its credibility by revealing himself to be so clownishly incompetent
Walsh "guesses" to Joe Rogan that "millions" of minors in the US have been given these drugs, when an absolute upper-range estimate within the bounds of reasonability is maybe something like 75,000? Another irony: the average NYT reader is better informed on the issue than Walsh
