🧵1/9 Climate restoration/ecosystem restoration: two strands of the essential golden thread of a new economy and new civilizations that we should now be fast building.

And they need massive focus over the next 7 yrs, supplementing stringent conservation+ climate protection.

2/9 Climate restoration is much newer: ecosystem-based strategies+technologies to remove CO2+oxidize methane, the most dangerous and shorter-lived molecule. This movement and its youth activists can learn from the older, more established ecosystem restoration networks +activists.

3/9 To be honest: as a biodiversity, ecosystem+ climate scientist I thought we’d be smarter than to overrun our planet so badly, still bickering about whether we really are. But clearly we haven't been smarter. #eventsareovertakingus So we have to get real about root causes.

4/9 And here we are: in undeniable #EarthOvershoot when our numbers+appetites are overwhelming all our good works. All our efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, biodiversity loss, plastic pollution, social inequities, urban crowding, addiction will fail, until we admit that

5/9 Conservation+climate protection are always smarter,wiser,cheaper,simpler than restoration. But #conservationbusinessasusual+ #climatebusinessasusual are no longer enough. We need to restore, as well as protect our climate +ecosystems. It's a leadership+economic opportunity.

6/9 So I feel it's past time to bring both the longer established #ecosystemrestoration and newer #climaterestoration global networks together, to accelerate progress massively in this most crucial #UNDecadeofEcosystemRestoration.
