25 years on, and here's a selection of the unpaid labour you can be forced to do, courtesy of the @MatchWorksAU Work for the Dole "opportunities" page 🥰 #AWFTD
@MatchWorksAU Let's not forget the origins of welfare-to-work... thank you to heroes of the working class Hawke & Howard for gifting millennials forced labour, along with so many other policies that benefit us to this day—from housing to workers' rights. #AWFTD
While the dole bludger myth politicians used to justify cruel "mutual" obligations are still with us, some things HAVE changed since Work for the Dole started.
In 1997, the @salvos pointed out the harms of WftD.
Today they're the largest exploiters of forced labour 🏆 #AWFTD
@salvos Meanwhile, as the introduction of Work for the Dole was being debated, JEFF KENNETT suggested it might be a good idea to pay people AWARD WAGES for their work. #AWFTD
A reminder: @salvos, as of January 2022, was exploiting Work for the Dole participants at 288 locations around the country.
On top of this, there are countless people in their 50s and 60s forced to "volunteer" at Salvos to fulfil "mutual" obligations. #AWFTD
Them in 1997:
@salvos Here's what two people who completed the #AWFTD survey had to say about their Work for the Dole experience with @salvos. Both placements were in 2022.
@salvos So, how did this radical shift to forced labour work out? The first evaluation in the 90s heard this from people who did Work for the Dole trial.
We're sure the government went on to address all these issues before it decided to rollout the program further 👀
Of course, we're still waiting to see whether anyone will ever be held accountable for the death of Josh Park-Fing, killed doing Work for the Dole a decade after the ANAO report & 2 years after Ernst & Young found 64% of sites didn't meet basic OH&S standards. #AWFTD
In the same year Josh was killed, Mick Smart suffered a life-altering injury doing Work for the Dole.
Centrelink later stole $13,000 of the compensation he received for an injury that destroyed his prospects of finding a sustainable job. #AWFTD
As one would expect, @AlboMP condemned this 🗑️🔥 of a program ... in 2003.
He highlighted that "7.8% of jobseekers became so disillusioned by their experiences... they simply gave up looking for a job and left the labour market. #AWFTD
To conclude this commemoration 25th anniversary of Work for the Dole, we will leave you with a series of contributions from people who have completed the #AWFTD survey.
You can complete the survey or find WftD sites to boycott in your area here: awftd.org
"I literally worked alongside a prisoner workforce" #AWFTD
TODAY: The human rights committee is holding a hearing on the continued use of compulsory income control programs (like the BasicsCard and the Cashless Debit Card replacement).
That's right, compulsory income control never went away!
We are again talking about whether cashless welfare "works" or not.
IT DOES NOT MATTER WHETHER IT WORKS.
You don't get to violate someone's rights just because it gets the outcome you want. You need to find a way to get the outcome without a human rights violation.
A reminder that income control programs are racist.
They were imposed on communities as part of the NT intervention under Howard, and Jenny Macklin made it worse under Rudd/Gillard.
It was then expanded under Abbott at the behest of Andrew Forrest, known social policy expert?
🧵
Today we publish our #PunishmentForProfit report, with support from @GetUp.
93% of people say "mutual" obligations harm their mental or physical health. We expected a strong response to these questions, but these figures surprised even us.
The bill that that will lock income control (CDC, Basicscard etc.) in Australian social policy is set to be debated today. The bill is likely to pass as both the coalition and ALP agreed that it should pass. So what does it mean? 👇 🧵
1. It's voluntary now, right? NO! Biggest myth. Income management in Australia is not a voluntary program. It is a mandatory program if you live in the NT and select locations in NSW, Vic and QLD.
2. Cashless Debit Card is gone, a win! NO! The coalition CDC might be gone, but the ALP have the 'Enhanced Income Management' card, which is exactly the same thing under a different name.
Has called for an increase, but not a figure.. not promising. It is also worth noting that these two recommendations are nothing new and have come from previous reviews on tax and social security.
Doesn't come to a conclusion on what is an acceptable poverty line, and says that "further analysis should be undertaken" and that the current pension rate is the best available...
we have consistently advocated for henderson line + new measure of poverty and will continue to
🤨 this is the issue with "lived experience". it has become a tick box exercise that is watered down and misused to deny people with direct and recent experience of having a voice to advocate for systems change.
a 'lived experience' person is trained to talk about how it feels, and not what we want to change. lived experience is a buzz word for the "adults" in the room, they misappropriate it to take power from us by giving us a manufactured platform.
it is a selective process, whereby they further perpetuate harm through "deserving" and "underserving". it's all about messaging, it's never about our lives and it is never about systems change, it's all for high paid advocates to score a "win" with our lives.
